Special Notes:
This CCE is designed to be attended by 2 students to allow you to share the commute; if you are interested in carpooling, please contact the CCE Office for their names.  Each student will spend two hours in both the palliative care and the medical-surgical units.  An assessment form is available for you to copy and take with you to assess patients while on the unit.

As always, please call the contact person if you will be even a few minutes late.

Specific CCE Goals:

  • Understand the hospice philosophy of caring for the dying person.
  • Witness the emotional, physical and family dynamics of a terminal
    illness.
  • Observe the activities of a hospital palliative care and medical-surgical units.

Objectives/Activities:
By participating in this assignment, medical students will be able to:

Review literature on hospice and identify the roles of the hospice team, including services provided, costs and client stipulations.

Identify the stages of death and dying typically manifested in persons with terminal illness.

Explain the use of medications, side effects and dosages needed to relieve and manage pain

Interview patients and families to learn more about the impact of terminal and chronic illness on their lives.

Observe the responsibilities of physicians and nurses while on the unit.

None

Dress:
Fairfield Medical Center has a strict dress code.  Be advised they do not allow bare legs or open-toed shoes, visible tattoos must be covered by band aids, only two earrings may be worn in each ear and no other piercing should be visible.  White lab jacket and identification badge must be worn with professional casual clothes, no blue jeans or tennis shoes.

Directions:

Merge onto US-33 W via EXIT 16A on the LEFT toward COLUMBUS / STATE ST.

 

Stay STRAIGHT to go onto US-33-BR / LOGAN LANCASTER RD SE / CR-33A W / LANCASTER BUSINESS ROUTE.

 

Stay STRAIGHT to go onto US-33-BR / LOGAN LANCASTER RD SE / CR-33A W / LANCASTER BUSINESS ROUTE. Continue to follow US-33-BR / LANCASTER BUSINESS ROUTE. Go through one light and look for the sign for Wilson Lane.

Turn right onto Wilson Lane and then take the next left onto Sugar Grove Road.  Follow Sugar Grove Road for several miles and up the hill until it becomes Ewing St.  The hospital is on the left, past the intersection with Main St, on Ewing St.

Responsibilities of the Medical Student:

·    While on agency property, medical students will conform to all applicable policies and procedures of the agency.

·    Medical students will exercise confidentiality with regard to all patient and/staff information gained during the clinical experience.
