Hocking Correctional Facility

Agency Information
Hocking Correctional Facility is a Level 1 and 2 facility providing a safe and secure environment and rehabilitative programming for a diverse groups of about 500 inmates, mostly older offenders.  The facility, which opened in 1983, sits on 18 acres just outside of Nelsonville.

Special Notes

  • An orientation to the facility will be held once a quarter.  Failure to attend the orientation will not change your assignment.

  • You MUST call Ms. Wheeler 2 days before your presentation.  If not, you will not be allowed to enter the facility.  An outline of your presentation must be given to Ms. Wheeler at the time of your CCE.

  • Please arrive on time; if you arrive even a few minutes late, please call the agency contact person to explain.

  • It is a felony to possess alcohol, drugs, weapons, and ammunition on state property.  State property includes your motor vehicle.

  • Take only necessary items and identification.  Purses and briefcases will be searched.  Do not bring pagers, cell phones, or electronic devices into the facility.

Specific CCE Goals

  • Gain experience in preventive medicine, patient teaching and community education by preparing and teaching relevant health topics to inmates at a correctional facility.

  • Develop interpersonal communication skills with individuals of diverse social and cultural backgrounds.

  • Practice social responsibility by contributing health presentations to the pre-release program and inmates at the jail.

Objectives/Activities

  • Observe the dynamics of a correctional facility.

  • Determine health concerns of individuals residing in a correctional facility.

  • Develop and instruct a 40- to 60-minute presentation for men in a corrections facility on selected topics such as hypertension, heart disease, effects of smoking, colo-rectal cancer, prostate cancer, depression, nutrition, arthritis, hepatitis C, diabetes, and dangers of tattoos & body piercing.  These resources may be obtained from the Area Health Education Center, 027 Grosvenor Hall or acquired from Internet sites such as Health Finder.

Equipment Needed for Activity
Inform Ms. Wheeler of the materials to be used during your presentation.

Dress
Identification Badge must be worn.  A visitor badge will be given to cover your OU-COM badge.  You are required to dress professionally.  No shorts, torn or ripped pants, crop tops, tank tops, or sleeveless shirts.

Responsibilities of the Medical Student

  • While on agency property, medical students will conform to all applicable policies and procedures of the agency.

  • Medical students will exercise confidentiality with regard to all patient and/or staff information gained during the clinical experience.

Directions
Take Route 33 West to Nelsonville. 
When you get to the Rocky Boot Outlet:
You turn right on to "Hocking St." and when you get to the square (the one with the fountain) you follow "Fort St." Turn right on to Pleasantville Ave. when you see the Hocking Correctional Center sign.
Go to the Second building, a one-story brick.  Enter in the side door and ask for Ms. Wheeler or her supervisor at the desk.
