Specific CCE Goals:

By participating in this CCE assignment, medical students will have increased knowledge of:

  • The services used to provide care to residents in an extended care facility.

  • The role of extended care and sub-acute care facilities.

  • Problems specific to the management of this population.

  • Communication problems common to the residents of an extended care facility, and skills to use to overcome these obstacles.

Objectives/Activities:
By participating in this assignment, medical students will be able to:

  • Develop an appreciation of the various aspects of care provided in an extended care facility including dietary, nursing, social work, activity therapy, PT/OT services and administration.

  • Describe the role extended care and sub-acute care facilities play in the continuum of care.

  • Identify problems specific to management of the elderly patient including failure to thrive, depression, delirium, delusion, dementia, bowel and bladder incontinence, fall assessment and prevention, and development of functional skills.

  • Practice communicating effectively with people who have impaired hearing, decreased cognitive skills, and/or communication disorders, including an interview with at least one resident.

Dress:
White lab jacket and identification badge.  Please wear professional casual clothes, no blue jeans or tennis shoes.   

Responsibilities of the Medical Student:

While on agency property, medical students will conform to all
applicable policies and procedures of the agency.

Medical students will exercise confidentiality with regard to all patient and/staff information gained during the clinical experience.

Directions:
Take Richland Avenue onto 50 West.  At the top of the hill, turn right onto Blackburn Road.  Take the first right onto Kimes Lane.  The center is down the road about .25 mile on the left.
