Special Notes:
Please call the contact person if you will be even a few minutes late.  There are likely to be several of your classmates traveling to a CCE in Marietta on the same day at the same time; if you are interested in carpooling, please contact the CCE Office for their names.

Specific CCE Goals

Gain an understanding of the dynamics of a birthing center

Understand the assessment procedures for women and infants in the
process of labor and delivery.

Outline strategies used to assist and support a woman in labor.

Learn about labor and delivery from a patient’s point of view.

Discuss, observe and assist in the birthing process.

Objectives/Activities:
By participating in this assignment, medical students will be able to:

·    Describe the physician’s and nurse’s roles during childbirth.                                                                 

     Assist in the assessment and care of  a woman and infant during and after the birth.

     Provide support and assistance to the woman in labor.       

     Assist in the delivery when appropriate.                           

     Interview families following birth to learn more about the experience from the patient’s point of view.

Equipment Needed for Activity:
None

Dress:
White lab jacket and identification badge.  Please wear professional casual clothes, no blue jeans or tennis shoes.   

Responsibilities of the Medical Student:

·    While on agency property, medical students will conform to all applicable policies and procedures of the agency.

·    Medical students will exercise confidentiality with regard to all patient and/staff information gained during the clinical experience.

Directions:
Take SR 50/US 7 to Marietta, OH.  After crossing the bridge, turn left at the 2nd light onto 3rd St.  Turn right onto Matthew St. (just past the only intersection with a traffic light on 3rd St.).  Go to the top of the hill.  The Birthing Center is on the 3rd floor of the main hospital.  Park in the outside parking areas on 4th St. past the parking garage on both sides of the road (not in the garage).  Come through the parking garage from the parking lots, the entrance is right outside the Strecker Caner Center on Level B - take the elevator to the 3rd floor, go across the walkway and follow the signs to OB.  It will take about 5 minutes to get from the parking lots to the Birthing Center.
