Special Notes:
O’Bleness is within walking distance of OU-COM,
just across Shafer St. If you drive, use the two lots
available for employee parking on the South Shafer side;
look for the green “Employee Parking” sign.
Plan to arrive at 7:30 AM in order
to make rounds with the pediatrician. Please call the contact person if you will be even a few
minutes late.

Instructors:
Assigned at time of CCE;
if Rhonda is not in, go the the Labor and Delivery Nurses
station and someone will be expecting you.
Specific CCE Goals:
· Gain an understanding of the dynamics of a
hospital nursery.
· Understand the different assessment procedures
(ex. Apgar Scores, Dubowitz, and systems assessments) used
to assess neonates.
· Identify medications administered to healthy
infants at birth.
· Gain an understanding of the psychosocial
issues facing some parents in the Appalachian region.
Objectives/Activities:
By participating in this assignment, medical students will be able to:
· Describe the physician’s role in this
department by reviewing the progress notes and orders in at
least on chart.
· Compare the assessment (APGAR, Dubowitz)
findings, treatment of and parental support given to a sick
neonate vs. a healthy neonate.
· Demonstrate the assessment of vital signs on a
healthy and/or an ill neonate.
· Prepare a mock SOAP note on a well and/or an
ill neonate.
· Interview parents of a well and/or an ill
neonate.
· Perform basic care of a newborn, such as
feeding and diapering.
· List and describe the medications administered
to a healthy newborn and their uses.
Equipment Needed for Activity:
None
Dress:
White lab jacket and identification
badge. Please wear professional casual clothes, no blue
jeans or tennis shoes.
Responsibilities of the Medical
Student:
· While on agency property, medical students
will conform to all applicable policies and procedures of
the agency.
· Medical students will exercise confidentiality
with regard to all patient and/staff information gained
during the clinical experience.
