Ohio University students with TB
skin test results
≥10
mm. are given the opportunity to participate in a
chemoprophylaxis program. These candidates are all
without active tuberculosis as evidenced by history,
physical exam and negative chest x-rays.

Specific CCE Goals:
· Develop consciousness of the challenges
inherent in serving a culturally diverse patient population.
· Gain knowledge of the importance of preventive
medicine as it relates to TB.
Objectives/Activities:
Medical students attending the VIP
clinic will:
· Observe and assist in teaching participants about TB infection and
disease as well as preventive therapy.
· Observe and assist with measurement of vital
signs and history gathering.
· Observe and assist with disease counseling for
tuberculosis.
· Observe and assist with the physical exam,
including palpation of the abdomen for liver enlargement,
auscultation of the lungs and heart, and reflex testing.
· Acquire interviewing skills by interaction
with participants of the VIP program.
· Develop creative ways to communicate
information to patients with a language barrier giving
consideration and appreciation to cultural differences.
· Discuss the common laboratory tests used to
monitor INH therapy and the normal values for these tests.
· Identify the need for referrals for other
health care and/or counseling services.

White lab jacket and identification
badge with professional casual clothes.
Responsibilities of the Medical
Student:
· While on agency property, medical students
will conform to all applicable policies and procedures of
the agency.
· Medical students will exercise confidentiality
with regard to all patient and/or staff information gained
during the clinical experience.
