University community invited to Minority Health Month
physician speaker series at medical school

The disparity in health conditions between minority and non-minority
populations in urban, suburban and rural areas takes center stage
during Minority Health Month this April at the Ohio University
Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM).
This year’s theme, Health Equity Can’t Wait. Act Now in Your
CommUNITY!, is a call to action and unity for the regions, the
state and local offices of minority health, the health departments
and all the organizations and partners involved and invested in
reducing health disparities, according to Alicia Boards, assistant
director for multicultural programs at OU-HCOM.
Minority Health Month celebrates its 25th anniversary
this year, according to the
Ohio Commission on Minority Health
web site. The Ohio Commission on Minority Health is the lead agency
organizing 48 other state minority health commissions into a
national association and is responsible for creating Minority Health
Month, which began in 1989 and became a national celebration in
2000.
This
year, OU-HCOM hosts three speakers, two of whom are OU-HCOM alumni.
University and OU-HCOM students, faculty and staff are
invited to attend the presentations; RSVP to Boards at

9, “Diversity of Medicine: How mentorship can change the face of
medicine.”, presented by Tyree M.S. Winters, D.O. (’07),
clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at the Ohio State
University Medical Center/Nationwide Children's Hospital.

April
23, Barbara Ross-Lee, D.O., vice president for health
sciences and medical affairs the New York Institute of Technology
and former dean at OU-HCOM from 1993 to 2001.

April
25, “Sexually Transmitted Infections: Experiences from the
front-lines,” presented by Jose Bazan, D.O. (’04), medical
director, Columbus Public Health Sexual Health Clinic, and assistant
professor of clinical internal medicine.
