The Childhood Obesity Prevention Program helps Athens County schools use national programs that encourage students to make healthier choices. The program works with area preschools, daycare centers and high schools to start services or programs that teach children about good nutrition and ways to stay active.

Our focus on very young children and teenagers complements the work the AmeriCorps/COMCorps program, one program of which works to improve eating habits and activity levels of Athens County elementary school kids.

This program works with preschools to implement the Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care (NAP SACC), a model developed at the University of North Carolina with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funding. Mary McPherson, R.N.C., our nurse coordinator for the Childhood Obesity Prevention Program, works with preschool leaders to assess the types of food they serve, student activity levels and other factors. After assessment, she provides training and consultation to assist school leaders in reaching their goals for healthier experiences for their students.

The Childhood Obesity Prevention Program is funded with a grant from the Ohio Department of Health’s Division of Child and Family Health Services program, which works to improve the health of infants, children and women in their childbearing years.
