Coordinator - Childhood Obesity Prevention
Program
Mary graduated from the Hocking
College LPN program in 1982 and the RN
program in 1984. In 1994 she attained
specialty certification for inpatient
obstetrical nursing by the National
Certification Corporation. She is currently
studying Advanced Practice Nursing at the
Frontier Nursing University, Hyden,
Kentucky, with a specialty focus in Women’s
Health. Mary received the Joyce D. Smith
Nursing Award from Hocking College in 1982.
In 1991 she received the Central Ohio March
of Dimes Nurse of the Year Award for her
efforts in promoting preterm birth
prevention in southern Ohio. Currently,
Mary is the nurse coordinator for the Child
and Family Health Services (CFHS) Childhood
Obesity Prevention Program. The program
centers on promoting good nutrition and
physical activity in Athens County with a
specific focus on preschool and high school
age children. Mary has worked at CHP since
1997 and served as nurse coordinator for
several programs in the past including the
Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening
Project, the Community Lice Prevention
Project, and the CFHS Perinatal Project that
spanned 11 years of perinatal nurse case
management services. Mary says “Helping
people of all ages take responsibility for
their individual health and inspiring them
to believe that they can” is what she enjoys
most about her job.
