The Ohio University
College of Osteopathic Medicine Community Health
Programs provides health care services to help meet
the needs of residents in a twenty-one county area
in Southeastern Ohio. These programs focus on the
delivery of health information and education, health
screenings and access to health services. Programs
have been designed to increase visibility and expand
OU-COM interaction with communities, schools, and
other health and community agencies.
Most services are offered either free of charge or
for a small fee. Services are provided in
cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, the Ohio Department of Health, county
health departments, many different community
agencies, area hospitals, organizations, businesses
and granting agencies.

AmeriCorps/ComCorps
This program serves Athens County children and
adults, offering lice and vision screenings,
health-care transportation, health education,
Healthy Start support and referrals to area
health-care providers. The AmeriCorps/ComCorps
program is funded by the Ohio Community Service
Council through federal support by the Corporation
for National Community Service. Service volunteers
are located at fourteen partner sites. Upon
completing a year of service, they are paid a living
allowance and receive loan forbearance and an
educational award. |

Childhood Immunization Program (CHIP)
Funded by the Ohio Department of Health, CHIP serves
21 Southeast Ohio counties. Regardless of income or
insurance status, children 0-18 years of age receive
free immunizations and assistance with kindergarten
registration, and adults have access to county-wide
flu clinics, regional hepatitis B immunization
clinics, parent education, and referral services. |

Healthy Adult Program (HAP)
HAP is a mobile clinic that serves adults in 10
Southeastern Ohio counties. The program offers
education and screenings for blood pressure,
cholesterol and diabetes for communities, community
agencies and businesses throughout the 10 counties.
HAP also offers a Breast and Cervical Cancer
Screening Program that provides screening, education
and referrals for mammograms and other health-care
needs to hundreds of uninsured and underinsured
women at no cost each year. HAP also provides adult
immunizations and bus driver physical assessments.
HAP is funded by the Columbus Affiliate of the Susan
G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the statewide
Breast and Cervical Cancer Project, the Ohio
University College of Osteopathic Medicine, the
Appalachian Regional Health Institute and various
other grants. |

Healthy Child Care Ohio Nurse Consultants (HCCO)
HCCO is funded by the Ohio Department of Health and
the Ohio Child Care Resource and Referral
Association to provide services in 18 Southeastern
Ohio counties. Through this program, a nurse
consultant is available to offer child-care
providers information on general health and safety
issues. Services also include a health consultation,
child vision screening, and education for child-care
providers and parents. |

Perinatal Services / Baby Steps Program
Funded by the Ohio Department of Health, this
program provides support, education and penatal care
coverage for underinsured or uninsured women in
Athens County. Case management for at-risk pregnant
women is also provided on referral from their health
care provider. All clients are educated about
pregnancy, delivery post-partum issues and baby
care. They also are made aware of the CFHS
Well-Child Program. |

Physical Clinics
This program provides Head Start physicals, bus
driver physicals and camper physicals throughout the
service area. Sports physicals for Athens county
youth are also provided at low cost by Community
Health Programs. |

Tuberculosis Prevention Program
The Very Important Prophylaxis (VIP) Clinic was
started approximately 20 years ago and is funded by
Athens County Tuberculosis Board. Held at Hudson
Health Center on the Ohio University campus, the
clinic provides chemoprophylaxis treatment for
currently registered Ohio University students who
have significantly positive TB skin test results.
Statistics show that since the inception of this
program, no student who was treated prophylactically
for TB infection, converted to active TB disease. |

Well Child Program
This program, provided in collaboration with area
schools, physicians and agencies, enrolls children
in Ohio Healthy Start Insurance. Uninsured and
underinsured children may qualify for free
preventive health care through the Medical Support
Service Fund voucher program. An assessment and
referral for children with Attention Deficit
Disorder (ADHD) is available, and a car seat program
offers car seats to WIC eligible parents in Athens
County for a small fee. Funded by the Ohio
Department of Health, these services are provided to
children residing in Athens County. |

Well Child / Well Families
This program is funded by the Ohio Children Trust
Fund administered through the Athens County Family
and Children First Council, and is available to
families who reside in Athens County. The program
provides education and services that address
unidentified Mental Health Disorders and other risk
factors associated with child abuse. These services
include family and child needs assessments,
parenting education, and referral and funding
assistance. |
