Global Classroom

OU-COM students have an opportunity to serve others, to learn about other forms of medical care and to better understand the role culture plays in health.  Every year more and more students travel to far away places to participate in international medical experiences.  The Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine promotes and supports student exposure to international medicine.

There are currently four structured international experiences that OU-COM sponsors:

Edinburgh Geriatric Tutorial Program
Each summer since 1985, OU-COM students have traveled to Scotland for this four-week tutorial program.  Students work alongside renowned Scottish geriatricians in hospitals and on visits to homebound patients.  For more information contact the Department of Geriatric Medicine/Gerontology.

Student Health Assistance Rural Experience (SHARE) Kenya
As part of SHARE Kenya, students, faculty and other health-care professionals travel to Kenya each November to work in underserved, rural clinics and hospitals, providing care, conducting research and receiving a one-of-a-kind experience.  Visit our SHARE Kenya website where you can read day by day diary entries and learn more about the program.  SHARE Kenya was founded by OU-COM alum and Kenya native Dr. Benson Bonyo.

Ecuador Tropical Disease Biology Workshop
As part of this workshop, students, physicians and researchers journey to the Amazon Basin of Ecuador each year to examine public health conditions and the impact tropical disease has on populations.  Visit the Tropical Disease Institute's web site for more information on the project and to view a web journal from the summer 2002 trip.

Sino-American Educational and Scientific Consortium
In February 2000, OU-COM helped form the creation of the first Sino-American educational and scientific consortium - an international initiative involving Chinese medical schools and OU-COM  - that will increase multi-national cooperation in the study and practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine through affiliated research, education and scholarly work.

OU-COM students also travel to many other countries to complete international rotations, including Bolivia, Nepal, Jamaica, Haiti, Turks and Caicos Islands and Ghana.
