Monday 1/13/035:00 am Alarm…snooze 5:15 am Woke up and went straight for the coffee pot 5:30 am This is my usual running time, but it is only 6 degrees right now…I think I’ll wait. Instead I’ll review my objectives from last week. I’m a little behind because I had too much fun this weekend-good thing it is a six-week block with plenty of time to catch up! 8:30 am Finished looking over objectives. It is 17 degrees, and I guess that is all I can hope for. I get my running clothes on and stretch while catching up on the news with the Today show. I like to try and keep up to date with what is going on in the world, so I at least know if we are going to war. 9:00 am-10:30 am Out the door for a 12 mile run. It is COLD!! I can’t even feel my feet hitting the ground. Still, this is my time of day that I value most. Time to think about whatever, relieve stress, and enjoy the scenery. 10:30 am Walk the dog. 11:00 am I’m ready to get back to work. I check my email to make sure there is not any important school information or changes, and find more things to add to my schedule. I’m not sure how I’m going to do it all, but I’ll figure that out later. 11:30 am I start preparing for lecture today. Looks like we have one lecture on “Bone dynamics” and one on “Mineral Metabolism.” It is a short day as far as lecture goes, but there is lots of material. I think I’ll start with Microanatomy and build from there into clinical topics. 1:00 pm Finished reading Microanatomy and eating lunch. Material was a little dry, so it took much longer than anticipated. Heading over school to the LRC to read another book before class. 1:15 pm Get to the LRC and find my book. I go check out the schedule for the first year class because they are in their Cardiovascular block. I’m thinking of going to a few of their lectures for some board review. I run into some people in my class and chat about the weekend and, as always, what we are all doing for board review. Dr. Woodworth catches me and says he needs to talk to me about class issues…then before I know it, it is time for class. So much for reading ahead of time-I should have known to hide out, but it can be nearly impossible. 2:00 pm Lecture on Bone dynamics from Dr Hikida. Some new stuff, but it seemed mostly like a review of material from previous blocks. Either way, Dr Hikida is a class favorite, so he could talk about anything and we would be happy. 3:00 pm-5:00pm Lecture from Dr Nowak on Mineral Metabolism. I definitely should have read in advance. Lots of work to do on that material! 5:00pm Quick OMM review while a friend worked on my foot that has been bothering me. Then, I head up to the bookstore to buy a book called “How the Endocrine System Works”…more like Endocrine for dummies. It is a good overview book that I read this weekend. I want a copy of for myself as I go through the block. But, as luck would have it, the bookstore was closed. So I walk back down to my car at school and head for home. I hate when I waste time. 6:15 pm Eat dinner and take care of emails. I download all of my lecture material from WebCT to study later. Quick instant message with my husband who lives in Columbus. I’ll be there for my rotations next year, and we’re thinking of buying a house. He had some pictures to show me about possibilities. 7:00pm Man, where did the day go? So much to do and so little time. Time to get to work on studying. I review my notes from lecture today. 8:00 pm CBL preparation- I read the cases and develop differential diagnosis, decide what labs to order, and learn about how the cases relate to the module that we are in…Bone Metabolism. 11:30pm I finished working on my cases. Even though I knew the diagnosis right away for them, there was a lot to be learned about the pathophysiology behind the diagnosis. I spend more time preparing for CBL because I learn so much more from the clinical scenarios, and they keep my interest a little better than straightforward textbook reading. Hopefully I know enough to contribute to the discussion tomorrow. Time to clean the apartment and get to bed for another early morning.
12:00 am
Bedtime!
Tuesday 1/14/035:00 am Alarm…snooze again! 5:15 am Wake up, back to the coffee pot 5:30 am I was planning to run, but my foot still hurts. I decide to stretch and head to the gym instead. 7:00 am Return from the gym, shower, check email, and head to school. 8:00 am CBL. Today we choose a member to represent the group at a focus group to discuss the last block, Renal Block. We have a short discussion on student feedback for the block team, then get started. It is my turn to present the first case, a woman presenting to the ER with a wrist fracture. I describe the clinical situation to the group and then ask for feedback on my presentation. We construct a differential diagnosis, order labs, evaluate our findings and have a short discussion on pathophysiology. Thursday, we will go more in depth with the basic science, answer discussion questions, and develop a treatment plan. We do the same for another case of a 2½-year-old child with Rickets. 10:00 am Off to the LRC to meet a couple of classmates for Board Review. We open up a Pathology Website on the big screen and answer questions. We discuss which answers are right, and why the others are wrong. We spend time going through books to refresh our memories about the diseases that we vaguely remember. It is actually a productive session, and for the first time so far, I am pretty happy with what I know. Most of the class is convinced that we are going to fail Boards. Apparently this is not a new concern for Year II students. 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm Curriculum Advisory Committee Meeting. This is my second year as the student representative for CPC 2005. Today we get updates from all of the administrators and updates on student progress from the first quarter. Then, there is much discussion about construction of exam questions. We talk about construction of questions similar to the board exam, that will also serve the purpose of testing the students’ knowledge, instead of test-taking skills. I have to leave before the meeting is over to go to class. 1:00 – 3:00pm Lecture on Growth Hormone. I’d venture to say that this was the best lecture we have had all year…up to date research that was actually done right here at OU-interesting stuff! I feel pretty comfortable that I have this information down well. Good, I still have to read that chapter from yesterday! 3:00 pm Quick check of my mailbox, then over to the LRC for a little OMM review. We have a practical exam in a couple of weeks over the skills that we learned in the first quarter. I have a reality check as to how much work I need to do to master this stuff. Cervical HVLA…I can set it up, but that thrust is always scary! 4:40 pm Head over to O’Blenness Hospital 5:00 pm Attend OB/GYN Grand Rounds. Tonight’s topic is ectopic pregnancy. I enjoy the casual atmosphere. For some reason it is more fun than sitting in lecture, but it is essentially a lecture. We don’t have the OB block before we take the boards, so it also serves as board review. 6:15 pm Head home and make dinner. I eat while I check my email, reply when necessary, and send out reminders to the class about upcoming events. 7:00 pm Tonight is different because I have a few non-block-related things to do before I get to work. I was nominated for Student DO of the Year, and the application is due tomorrow, so I need to put together some information. 10:00 pm I’m a little upset that it took me so long to put together my information for that packet, but that is the way it goes. I’m pretty frustrated with how little I’ve accomplished this week as far as school goes. So, I sit down to read. I spend the rest of the evening reading our required endocrinology text. 12:00 am Quick chat with my husband, then its time for bed. Tonight I feel like I should stay up and continue working, but I know that in the long run I’ll end up more tired and less productive. I could skip working out in the morning, but then nobody would want to be around me! 12:25 am I grab the dog and head to sleep. Wednesday 1/15/035:15 am Alarm goes off 5:30 am Well, it is –2 degrees and my foot still hurts, so I think I’m headed for the gym. I stretch and watch the news while the car warms up. 5:45 am Off to the gym 7:35 am Back from the gym, throw in a load of laundry, and hit the shower 8:00 am I check my email, download and review note service, and check my schedule for the day. 8:15 am I start working on writing a letter of support for a grant that Dr Gotfried is applying for. 9:30 am Finished the letter and make the final changes on an application that I have to submit today. 10:00 am I review for the OMM quiz today. It will cover the treatment of specific thoracic and rib segments. 10:45 am I’m headed for the bookstore to get that book I wanted for this block. Hopefully they have it. Then, I have to drop off my letter to Dr Gotfried and turn in my application. I hope this moves quickly because I still have some reading to do before the noon lecture, but it probably isn’t going to happen. 11:40 am I bought my book and went to school. Dropped off all appropriate paperwork, checked my mailbox, had a quick chat with the Student Council President and head over to a lunchtime lecture. No, I still didn’t read. 12:00 pm Optional lecture by Dr Shubrook on diabetes and insulin therapy. We have the module that covers this material later in this block, so I took what I could from it. Clinical relevance is always good. 1:00 pm-3:00pm OMM Lab. We took a quiz that covered last week’s material. The lab focused mostly on tenderpoints from T10-L2 as well as Chapman’s reflexes. This stuff is cool. You can understand what visceral problems a patient is having based on how their body is responding…very cool. After class I ask Dr Eland to take a look at my foot. Dennis and Sarah, who previously worked on my foot watch, and he explains to them what he feels and what he is correcting. Just like that, my foot feels BETTER! Good enough to run over to class because I’m about to be late. 3:00pm-5:00pm Lecture by Dr Schwartz, an Endocrinologist, on Calcium Homeostasis and Metabolism. It was a pretty good lecture because it was interactive, and he focused a lot on clinical applications of the concepts, which I like. 5:00 pm I head over to the “Farmacy” to buy some vegan products to make brownies for a birthday party at my friend’s house…who is obviously vegan. Then I head home. 5:30 pm I whip up those brownies and some dinner at the same time. The brownies look a little weird, but whatever! 6:00 pm Talk to my brother on the phone, check my email, instant message with my hubby, and now it is time for some work. This hasn’t been my most stellar studying week. 6:00 pm The rest of my evening was spent preparing for CBL tomorrow and reading the required text. 12:00 am I can’t keep my eyes open any more, so I guess it is time for bed.
