Amanda's November - December Diary

November 3, 2003

7:00- Histology Review for our upcoming exam

8:10- Nutritional Immunity Lecture

10:10- OMM Lab

12:10- Emergency Medicine Lunch about typical ER visits

1:00- CBL groups- This week we are studying leukemias.

3:00- Clinical Skills Lab- we were paired with another student and we had to do a history and physical on our patient and identify their disease. We have been studying anemias, clotting disorders and leukemias this block so as the physician you had to do a physical exam, order lab tests and interpret the results in order to determine which specific disease your patient had.

5:00- Out to dinner with my roommates

7:00- Reviewed Cancer Drugs and related Pharmacology

8:00- Learned all about Leukemias

10:30- Left the LRC! I came home took a shower, talked to Ben and went to bed…

December Schedule

December 8, 2003

7:15- Wake up and get ready for the day that awaits me!

8:10- Synthesis and Integration- these sessions are held once a week and relate to the clinical cases we have been studying in our CBL (Case Based Learning) groups. This week we had a case on poxvirus and another case on dog bites. Each S&I session has a panel of professors who are experts on the subject presented in the cases. We normally spend the first hour asking them questions concerning the cases and the second hour we have a related unknown case to study as a class.

9:30- S&I finished early today so I decided to spend the next forty minutes reviewing last week’s material. One helpful hint I have learned about medical school is to try to make good use of your time in between classes so that you will have less to do at the end of the day.

10:10- Ethical Case concerning burn patients. We talked about a patient’s rights to make their own decisions concerning treatment and discussed a controversial case concerning treatment for a burn patient.

11:10- OMM Lecture about Chapman’s Reflexes.

12:10- Pediatric Lunch Lecture about Internships and Residencies through Richmond Height Hospital.

1:00- OMM Review- our BIG OMM final is next week so a group of us met for a quick hour review.

2:30- Studying- I came home and worked on our next two cases for our CBL group. Right now, we are in dermatology block so this week’s cases were on skin tumors.

4:00- Objective Review- Each week we are assigned objectives that cover the information we have covered in lecture. Each member of our class is assigned an objective and we research that topic and write an explanation for it. We exchange objectives each Friday so that by the end of the week you have a copy of the answers to every objective. I try to read through all the objectives during the weekend but then I review objectives several times during the next week to make sure I really know all of them.

5:15- Step Aerobics

6:30- Dinner and Shower

8:00- OMM Review- With the test coming up, a few friends and I are meeting in the lab to practice some of the OMM techniques on each other.

9:30- Pre-reading for tomorrow’s lectures. There are always reading assignments for each lecture and I try to read those before class whenever possible.

11:00- The LRC (our medical school library) closes at 11pm so it’s time to go home and sleep!
