Alyssa's November/December Diary Monday, December 8, 2003 6:15 am
I try to pull myself out
of bed for this short day of classes. On Mondays, we typically attend
classes from 8am to noon. It was about 28 degrees this morning so I decided to drive to school this morning. It took about 5 minutes to warm up my car and brush the frost off my windshields. 8:10 – 9:30 am We had our first Synthesis and Integration session for this Dermatology Block. Dr. Clay was the clinician presenting a case regarding SLE (lupus). We got out of S & I early so my colleagues and I went over some objectives in preparation for the upcoming Derm exam. 10:10 am Dr. Gevitz presented a video about a burn victim. We were to watch the documentary, paying close attention to the ethical issue involved (i.e. autonomy, paternalism, beneficience, etc.) It was a very touching documentary and raised several ethical issues—which will be discussed in the next couple of days. 11:10 am Jean Rettos, an OMM fellow gave us a lecture about Chapman Reflexes and their diagnostic usefulness. Everyone was a little nervous after the lecture because our OMM written exam and practical are less than one week away. 1:00 pm After running a few errands, I came back to the apartment for lunch. My roommate and I watched TV for half an hour while we ate lunch and unwound. 2:00 –5:00 pm Since our Derm exam is next Thursday, I thought it was time to get moving on my objectives. I dedicated these 3 hrs toward reading over past lecture notes and going through the weekly medical knowledge objectives from last week’s classes. 5:30 pm I took a short nap and woke up to make dinner. 7:00-11:00 pm A couple colleagues came over to my apartment to review some OMM notes. We went through some objective questions and practiced a few procedures. Studying together with friends usually broke up the monotony of simply reading through notes and books. 11:15 pm Showered, checked email, called my fiancée. 12:00 am Bed-time.
