OUCOM’s Study Abroad in Beijing 2004

 Ohio University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine will conduct a month long program in Beijing, China this summer.  The program, which will focus on Traditional Chinese Medicine, will depart on or about June 19, 2004 and return July 18, 2004. Participants will attend the Guang An Men Hospital, (Beijing), of the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, studying Traditional Chinese Medicine, (TCM), in the afternoon and participating in Hospital or Clinic rounds in the mornings.  The Guang An Hospital has bilingual staff.  Requirements for admission to this program are: Faculty or Students enrolled in a Medical School, or University, with a stated interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The training schedule will be composed of the following subjects.  In week 1: TCM Diagnosis, week 2: Acupuncture, week 3: Tui Na and Qigong, week 4: Chinese Herbal Medicines.  This program is intended to expose students to a wide variety of Traditional Chinese Medicine concepts and practices.  The students will be taught the basic theories of TCM, and the four diagnostic methods of observation, auscultation and olfaction, interrogation and palpation, and syndrome differentiation.  They will learn about Acupuncture - the therapeutic insertion of solid needles in various combinations and patterns to encourage the flow of Qi, a subtle vivifying energy through classically described channels. They will learn Tuina - the Chinese massage and manipulation technique to establish the flow of Qi, and will learn Qigong - which consists primarily of meditation, relaxation, physical movement, mind-body integration, and breathing exercises.  Students will also learn about Chinese Herbs and their use in the prevention and treatment of disease.

Lectures and Clinical experience will take place at the Guang An Men Hospital.  This hospital sees over 2000 outpatients a day and has over 500 inpatient beds, and 24 clinical departments. The Guang An Men Hospital, (including the Second institute of Clinical Medicine and the Institute of Ophthalmology), was founded in 1955 as an affiliated hospital of the China Academy of TCM.  It is a general hospital of TCM conducting clinical practice scientific research and teaching. It is a clinical pharmacological research base of Chinese herbs and also a part of the Traditional Medicine Cooperative center organized by WHO. The State Administration Bureau of TCM awarded the titles of "The class A among First Grade of TCM Hospitals” and "National Key Model Hospital of TCM" to Guang An Men Hospital in 1994. Entrusted by the Ministry of Public Health, this hospital runs TCM training courses for doctors of Western Medicine (WM). There are 13 wards with 505 beds in the Inpatient Department. The daily outpatient visits number over 2000.This hospital has 24 clinical departments including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology, Pediatrics, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Acupuncture, Massage, Urology, Qi-gong, Proctology, Dermatology, Gerontology, Stomatology, ENT, Emergency Medicine, and an Isolation Dept. for patients with Hepatitis.

Non-classroom activities that will take place include: Organized trips to Beijing’s famous sites including: The Forbidden City - between 1420 and 1911 the residence and court of the Ming and Qing dynasties.  The Great Wall of China, built between the 5th century B.C. and the 16th century A.D. The Ming Tombs, with royal treasures from the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). The Summer Palace, the largest imperial garden in China, strewn with Palaces, and architectural flights of fancy, the summer resort of the imperial court.  The Temple of Heaven, first built in 1420, the finest temple in Beijing, it represents the highest development of religious architecture in China.  The Lama Temple (Yonghe Gong) built in 1624 is the liveliest functioning temple in Beijing, an active Lamasery.  The White Cloud Temple, a Taoist temple dates to the Tang dynasty, and is the supposed burial site of Lao Tzu.

Participants will stay at the Guang An Hotel, adjacent to the Hospital.  It is a relatively new, air conditioned; hotel in Beijing, with a special rate of $30 per night, students can share a room.  The rate includes Breakfast.  There are affordable restaurants throughout Beijing where students can purchase meals. 

The cost of this trip is presently calculated at $4300 to $4500.  This fee includes Tuition, Airfare, Hotel, some meals and sightseeing activities.  One full scholarship (Daniel Shao Scholarship) will be awarded on a merit basis.
