![]() As the leaves have been exploding with color here in Athens, OU-COM has been exploding with activity! A new entering class of students, a successful research day, convocation/white coat ceremony along with a new diabetes research center are just a few of the things that have kept our faculty, staff and students energized! On September 2, we welcomed the class of 2007. This dynamic group of 107 students set or tied the record for highest grade point averages in OU-COM's twenty-eight year history. Before this talented group of future physicians and surgeons even arrived on campus, OU-COM was in the final stages of opening our region's only Diabetes/Endocrine Center. Reports indicate that 12 to 15 percent of the Appalachian population suffers from diabetes compared to 6 percent nationally. National Osteopathic Medicine week was September 20-27 and it was quite a week! Our students, faculty and staff celebrated the event by hosting a blood drive, an information fair and an adult health fair. September 20th marked our twenty-eighth annual Convocation and White Coat Ceremony. 3 individuals were awarded the Philips Medal of Public Service and 107 students participated in the annual ritual that signifies their commitment to becoming an osteopathic physician. The 2nd Annual Research Day held on September 26 was another huge success! Over 30 students and faculty converged on the Bricks in Irvine Hall to discuss and explain their research. Matthew Majzun won special recognition for his research in the "use of large-array surface electromyography (LASE) in osteopathic research".
