These pictures were taken during a recent cruise aboard the ice-breaking research vessel Nathaniel B. Palmer in the Ross Sea, Antarctica. The objective of the cruise was to collect Antarctic fishes for scientific study. The pictures show typical pack ice conditions during December-January, the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf, Coulman Island, the interior of the ship including Capt. Joe Borkowski on the bridge, and typical fauna of the Ross Sea such as killer whales, Adelie penguins and the dominant midwater fish Pleuragramma antarcticum.
