Clinical Themes:

• Breast cancer: lymphatic spread, peau d’orange, etc.

• Thoracentesis (pleuracentesis, pleural tap)

• Projection of heart onto thoracic wall

• Rib fracture and somatic pain

• Intercostal nerve block

 

Question of the Day:

A lung cancer patient presents with dyspnea and decreased breath sounds. A chest x-ray shows fluid around the lung (pleural effusion). To drain the fluid, where would you put the thoracentesis needle, what surface anatomy landmarks can you use, and what structures will you penetrate?
