The research interests of the Biomedical Sciences faculty encompass a broad spectrum of disciplines including molecular biology and gene regulation, virology, tropical disease, toxicology, pharmacology, microbiology, cell and developmental biology, physiology, endocrinology, functional morphology and evolutionary biology. These diverse faculty interests are organized into three interdepartmental research focus groups: 1) Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, 2) Integrative and Regulatory Biology, and 3) Cell, Development and Microbiology. Access the faculty web-pages directly for more information on research activities.

Graduate students have the opportunity to pursue MS or Ph.D. degrees through the interdepartmental graduate programs in Biological Sciences, Molecular and Cellular Biology, or Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Medical students interested in research have the opportunity to work towards a combined D.O./Ph.D. degree. The program of study is flexible and customized to the goals of individual students. Graduate training generally consists of a combination of lecture-based and laboratory-based coursework, independent laboratory research projects, attendance at the quarterly seminar series and participation in weekly laboratory research meetings and journal clubs for the exchange of ideas.

The Department of Biomedical Sciences supports several state-of-the-art research facilities, including transmission and scanning electron microscope suites, a quantitative microscopy and imaging facility with a laser scanning confocal microscope, cryostats, ultracentrifuges, a phosphorimager, gel documentation centers, nucleic acid sequencing facilities, a NMR facility, a mass spectrophotometry facility, AAALC-accredited animal holding facilities, comparative biomechanics lab and a hybridoma laboratory. Ohio University Libraries provide outstanding on-campus and on-line services.

The Ohio University campus, situated at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, is a picturesque setting that offers numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation including hiking and swimming at several nearby state parks, an on-campus nine-hole golf course, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a state-of-the-art recreation facility and a 17-mile Rails-to-Trails bike path.
