Guide for getting full text of
journal articles
Most folks try to get the full text of a
journal article by going directly to the publisher’s website. While
this is a logical approach, it often results in a message telling
you that you are welcome to see the text as soon as you pay the
hefty per article fee charged by the publisher. This is usually not
necessary for members of the Ohio University community.
While there are a lot of tricks to finding full
text of an article, here are three high-yield and relatively simple
strategies:
1) When you search PubMed, use this link, which
is customized for OU-HCOM users:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?myncbishare=oucom
Or CLICK HERE FOR
INSTRUCTIONS for using the OU-HCOM PubMed link.
2) When searching any of the OhioLINK databases—go
to (http://www.ohiolink.edu/resources/dblist.php?by=subject&search=hmed)
for the health related ones—you can click on the icon
in the citation to determine the item's availability.
Or CLICK HERE FOR INSTRUCTIONS for
using the OhioLink health related databases.
3) The third most useful trick is to use OU’s
interlibrary electronic document delivery system
(https://illiad.library.ohiou.edu/illiad/logon.asp).
The first time that you log onto the system you will need to
answer a few questions.
This service provides scans of articles and excerpts from
books from local print holdings as well as items which must be
procured outside the University's library system. The scans are delivered to you electronically,
as pdf (Acrobat Reader) files, usually within 2-10 days.
Notification is via your OU Oak email address. You then have
30 days to log on again and retrieve your article(s).

OU's interlibrary electronic document delivery system.
