COMPARATIVE AND EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY PROGRAM

The Comparative and Exercise Physiology Program facilities are primarily housed in either Irvine Hall or the Life Sciences Building located on the West Green of Ohio University.  Sophisticated facilities for both animal and human investigations exist, with those available to students including standard exercise and metabolic physiology facilities such as VO2max testing equipment, underwater weighing body composition equipment and isometric and isokinetic strength testing equipment.  In addition to these facilities, other state-of-the-art equipment includes: a muscle biopsy laboratory; an electron microscopy facility; a quantitative microscopy and imaging facility with a laser scanning confocal microscope; transcranial and peripheral nerve stimulators; electrophysiology recording facilities; immunoradiometric assay and radioimmunoassay equipment; a transgenic mouse facility; a molecular genetics laboratory with computer-assisted DNA, RNA, and protein sequencing facilities; and an NMR facility.  Animal holding facilities are available for ectothermic and endothermic vertebrates and aquatic animal holdings. The Alden Library has approximately 1.1 million volumes and receives over 1000 biological and biomedical journals. Access to other Ohio universities collections are also available through the OhioLink library system.
