ABOUT THE CORE

The Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education (CORE) System is an educational consortium comprised of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, affiliated hospitals, and affiliated colleges (Raabe College of Pharmacy at Ohio Northern University and the Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine at Kirksville, Des Moines, and Kansas City).  The CORE was established to support and promote excellence in the continuum of osteopathic medical education that begins with matriculation at an osteopathic medical school and extends through residency training and beyond into Continuing Medical Education. CORE Members collaborate on areas of mutual interest including: curriculum development, faculty development, educational standards, and research/scholarly activity.

WHO ARE GROUP IV FACULTY?

CORE Group IV Faculty are individuals who signify their willingness to teach and mentor and they typically precept student, interns, residents or fellows on a regular basis.  Physicians, physician assistants (PA), advanced practice nurses, and any other healthcare provider or allied health professional who holds a terminal degree may apply to receive a CORE Group IV Faculty appointment.  Once CORE Group IV Faculty status has been granted, faculty are required to participate in faculty devleopment activities provided by the CORE system.  Within the first year, newly appointed Group IV Faculty must complete a brief orientation module entitled  New Preceptor & CORE Faculty Information” found at http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/newpreceptor.htm.  

 

CORE Group IV Faculty hold a Group IV faculty appointment through Ohio University.  This appointment does not include financial compensation, malpractice insurance, educational benefits, tenure, or membership in the Faculty Senate.  However, CORE Group IV Faculty are eligible for all the privileges listed in this brochure.

 

PRIVILEGES

An Ohio University (OU) Identification (ID) Card is required for library access and all discounts, etc.  For further information or questions about the process for obtaining an OU ID card you may call the office of Pre-doctoral Education at 740-593-2185.  To obtain an Ohio University Identification Card you need to contact your CORE office (see list above).

 

Privileges for all CORE Clinical Faculty:

Faculty development programs provided by the college for free.  See website at: http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/ and opportunities to participate in special college programs for physicians.

 

Privileges with an OU ID card:

Ø      Access to Ohio Library and Information

Ø      Network (OhioLINK) -- Information at http://www.library.ohiou.edu or call the OU Health Science Library at (740) 593-2682 (Connie Flores)

Ø      Borrowing privileges through Alden Library at Ohio University

Ø      Use of the OU-COM Learning Resource Center while on campus

Ø      Parking permit while on campus (Vehicle must be registered)

Ø      Discount on books/merchandise from participating bookstores in Athens

Ø      Discount on hotels, airfares, car rentals when on OU business (discretion of vendor based on policy and availability).

Ø      Discount on OU sporting events (i.e. season tickets for football, basketball  etc.)

Ø      Discount on recreational facilities (i.e. Aquatic Center, Golf Course, Tennis Courts, Bird Arena, and Ping Center) 

Ø      Admission to vendor, book, and other fairs hosted by the college & university.

 

HOW ARE APPOINTMENTS MADE?

If you are interested in seeking an appointment as CORE Group IV Faculty, please contact the CORE hospital office at the phone number listed on this brochure to receive an application package. 

 

Once your package is complete, return it to the CORE office.  The CORE Assistant Dean will review your application, complete a recommendation form and forward the package to the office of Pre-doctoral Education in Academic Affairs at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine.  The respective departmental Promotion and Tenure Committee will then review your application and return it to the office of Pre-doctoral Education in Academic Affairs indicating the Committee’s approval for appointment with rank designation.

 

Appointments are for a three-year term.  After the specified term has expired, if you still meet the criteria, you will be sent a reappointment application.  At this time you will also be considered for promotion in rank.  Promotions are based on the criteria specified in the “Protocol Governing the Appointment and Promotion of CORE Group IV Faculty”: Section II.
