The Concept Mapping Homepage: Concept mapping is a technique for representing knowledge in graphs. Concept mapping can be done for pretest; review; study; to generate ideas (brain storming, etc.); to design a complex structure (long texts, hypermedia, large web sites, etc.); to communicate complex ideas; to aid learning by explicitly integrating new and old knowledge; to assess understanding or diagnose misunderstanding. It's a great tool to have in your tool box!!

NEW! Medical Spanish for Healthcare Providers: This site is presented as a free medical Spanish immersion, with vocabulary including greetings, history, examination, and everyday speech, all with translation and audio. It is designed to be helpful for a variety of medical personnel. In addition to introducing Spanish medical terms, this site will hopefully improve fluency and even cultural competency.

 

American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC)

The AAMC conference is held annually in late October or early November. Every other year it is held in Washington, D.C. The conference will be held in DC this year (2001) on Nov. 2-7. The conference is very large and actually has several conferences/sections within the context of the bigger conference. Examples are: Research in Medical Education (RIME), Special Interest Groups (SIGs), Group on Educational Affairs, etc.

The Generalists in Medical Education

The Generalists in Medical Education welcome basic scientists, clinicians, and other educators interested in medical education. They are educators who teach, conduct research, and provide support services in all areas of predoctoral, postdoctoral, and continuing medical education. Specific areas of interest include curriculum and faculty development, testing and evaluation, and student services. At each annual conference, we exchange ideas and knowledge to enhance our professional growth. Each conference offers opportunities to develop understanding of the latest initiatives and innovations in medical education and to explore solutions to educational problems. The conference is held annually in the same city as AAMC and overlaps with it. This year the meeting is on Nov 3 and 4 at the Radisson Barcelo. Group on Educational Affairs (GEA)

The GEA is part of AAMC and works to promote excellence in the education of physicians. It is comprised of regional groups. The Central Group on Educational Affairs (CGEA) sponsors several educational components of the larger AAMC annual meeting including Special Interest Groups (SIGs), Research in Medical Education (RIME), and Innovations in Medical Education exhibits (IME). The CGEA also has an annual education conference in the Spring in the Central US.

Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM)

STFM has several national conferences annually. Their biggest conference is the annual conference held in the Spring. This conference is attended by family physician educators, medical educators, and behavioral scientists. The conference focuses on the improvement of family medicine training at all levels. Types of sessions include research presentations, seminars, workshops, plenary sessions, lecture discussions, etc.

Another STFM conference focuses specifically on undergraduate family medicine education. It is held annually in January/February.

Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM)

The annual conference of SGIM is similar in format to the annual STFM conference. The 2001 meeting will be held on May 2-4 in Atlanta. See website information at http://www.sgim.org/Publicweb/Meetings/default.htm.

American Educational Research Association (AERA)

This conference has several divisions, one of which is Division I: Education in the Professions. This conference features symposia, roundtables, research presentations, etc.

International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE)

This is a great organization for those interested in the integration of basic and clinical sciences. They conduct an annual conference in July and it is attended by clinicians, basic scientists, and medical educators. To IAMSE web site is located at: http://www.iamse.org/conf_future.htm. This website provides information (e.g. abstracts) from the recently held meeting at Mayo. The 6th Annual IAMSE Association Meeting will be held in Guadalajara Mexico in 2002. The 7th Annnual Meeting will be in Washington DC in 2003 at Georgetown Uninversity SOM and the 8th Annual Meeting will be held at Tulane University SOM in New Orleans.

 

International Ottawa Conference on Clinical Competence

In 1985, a series of international conferences was started by Ian Hart, M.D. of Ottawa, Canada and Ronald Harden, M.D. of Dundee, Scotland. Now known as the "Ottawa Conference," the aim of these meetings has been to assemble health care educators from around the world. Important goals of this forum are to share educational experiences and to improve evaluation instruments used to train health care professionals.
