Rural Senior Outreach/Health Fair
Meeting Health Care Needs

Clinical services offered by the geriatrics team cover the continuum of care for older adults. These include the ambulatory geriatrics clinic,  home visits, assisted living and long-term care. The goal for these services is to meet the health-care needs of a growing elderly population while educating predoctoral and postdoctoral osteopathic medical students.

Geriatric Medicine Clinic, Geriatric Assessment and Acute Care

The geriatrics clinic, established in 1981, provides primary care services to older adults. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Geriatric assessment is provided as requested by other health professionals and families. Patient care is also enhanced by the efforts of a registered nurse and a  nurse practitioner in the Athens location.

Long-term Care, Assisted Living and Home Care

Four nursing homes and one group home are served by department geriatricians. Nursing homes served by the department are Huston Nursing Home in Hamden, Russell Nursing Homes in Albany, Kimes Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Athens, and The Laurels of Athens.

Medical services are also provided at Lindley Inn, an assisted living facility. As older adults in the practice become too frail to come to the ambulatory clinic, they are seen by Dr. Batchelor and a geriatric nurse in the UMA Home Visit Program.

Rural Senior Outreach/Health Fair

Interprofessional teams traveled to rural communities each quarter for Rural Senior Outreach and Glaucoma Screening. The teams included students, faculty and providers from a number of disciplines The wide range of professionals provided seniors with an opportunity to get glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure and glaucoma screenings along with one-on-one consultations with a social worker, a nutritionist, an exercise physiologist, an outreach librarian, a recreation and sports expert, a primary care physician, a pharmacist, a social worker, representatives from the Area Agency on Aging, Community Food Initiative, Visiting Nurses/Hospice, Hocking Valley Community Action, Senior Beat, and Program ACTIVE and the Athens County Auditor’s office regarding the Homestead Tax exemption.

The one-on-one interactions are conducted in a relaxed atmosphere with no time restraints, allowing participants to ask questions and determine when they understood enough to move on to the next table. Additionally, medical students assist with the glaucoma screening and provide educational displays and material.

Between November, 2007 and May, 2010, we held Outreaches in 9 different communities with nearly 300 people participating (236 ≥ 50 years old). Over 110 individuals received hearing tests, nearly 120 had glaucoma screens, and nearly 75 were screened for osteopenia and osteoporosis.

Below is a list of everyone who participated since we began in 2007. We would like to thank the Athens Foundation, Sisters of St. Joseph Charitable Fund, the Heritage Foundation and Friends of the Congressional Glaucoma Caucus for providing the funds  and equipment for  programs during the 20007/2008 and 2008/2009 academic years.  A special thanks to Dr. Susan Quinn for overseeing The Student Sight Saver Program.

Additional funding came from Bureau of Health Professions, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The grant funds the Western Reserve Geriatric Education Center, a member of a nationwide network offering education and training opportunities. OU-HCOM uses the funds to reach rural providers who work with seniors and seniors themselves.

The outreach programs are a collaboration between the Department of GM/G and the Community Health Programs (http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/csp).
