On July 1, 1998, the former Geriatric Medicine/Gerontology Section of the Department of Family Medicine gained departmental status, becoming the Department of Geriatric Medicine/Gerontology. The primary goals of the department are to provide geriatric content in predoctoral and postdoctoral medical education, geriatric knowledge base enhancement, and outreach and consultation.
