    • Jerrod Steimle presented his MSTAR research, The inpatient hospital experience of caregivers of older adults: A qualitative study, at the Presidential Poster Session at AGS in Seattle. He received a Jerome Kowal Scholarship to help cover conference costs..

    • Rachel Hart, MS III, attended the University of Edinburgh for a one-month rotation March 5-30, 2012. Fund from our program provided her with a $1,500 stipend.

    • 3 students received placements  in the national competitive MSTAR:

    • ·         Megan Cochran, US San Diego; M.     • Department members received $498,000 in grant money.

    • George Asaad, MS II, presented at the Presidential Poster Session at AGS in Washington, D.C. May 12: Title: Rapamycin inhibition of TNF-alpha production by splenocytes in a rat model for obese frailty: Specific to T-cell stimulation as part of the MSTAR program.  He was also was awarded the Jerry Kowal Scholarship to attend the AGS conference in May.

    • Jerrod Steimle was selected for the nationally competitive MSTAR program for this summer at Johns Hopkins University with Dr. Gau as his mentor.

    • Rachel Hart, MS III, was accepted at the University of Edinburgh for a one-month rotation March 5-30, 2012. Fund from our program will provide her with a $1,250 stipend.

    • Department members received $482,000 in grant money.

    • Department members published 14 articles and gave 20 presentations.

    Annual Report 2009/10

    • The three-week Geriatrics Block course was taught spring of 2010.

    • The Department completed the third year of a collaborative grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to support a consortium site of the Western Reserve Geriatric Education Center (WRGEC) at OU-HCOM. We submitted a new proposal for the next cycle, which increase from three to five years.

    • Dr. Carlsen was promoted to Assistant Dean for Clinical Education, effective on May 10, 2010.

    • Dr. Gau was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in Geriatric Department, effective on July 1, 2010

    • Dr. Gau was appointed as Geriatric Department Chairman by Dean Brose.

    • Two community-based programs provided needed resources to the elderly and their families.

    • The three-week Geriatrics Block course was taught twice: July/August 2008 and May, 2009.

    • The Department received $54,000 as part of a collaborative grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to support a consortium site of the Western Reserve Geriatric Education Center (WRGEC) at OU-HCOM. It is a three year grant.

    • T. Heckman, J. Gau, V. Heh, B. Heckman and R. Barcikowski.  Title: Telephone Delivered Coping Improvement Intervention for HIV-Infected Older Adults.  Sponsor: NIH, received year 3 funding in the amount of $364,355.00.  This is a 4 year study.

    • Rebecca Teagarden and Katherine Ritchey participated in the annual Charles J. Cannon Edinburgh Geriatric Tutorial Program, a program partially funded through contributions from previous participants.

    • Lauren Wasson and Jennifer Drost participated in the annual Charles J. Cannon Edinburgh Geriatric Tutorial Program, a program partially funded through contributions from previous participants. Rebecca Teagarden and Katherine Ritchey were selected for the 2008 slots.

    • Two new community-based programs provided needed resources to the elderly and their families.

    • Caregiver Series: a five-part series held throughout April covered topics of interest to those caring for elderly family members and friends.

    • Senior Rural Outreach: interprofessional teams traveled to rural communities, offering health screenings, consultations and education.

    • A two-part nurse aid education program began in four nursing homes with topics based on surveys conducted with nurse aids.

    Interprofessional

    Faculty and staff collaborate with other colleges and organizations to provide interprofessional programs:

    • Dr. Carlsen:Expanded a program of interprofessional education with Ohio State University (OSU) School of Pharmacy to train 16 Pharm D students in Athens by developing an Academic Elective in Case-Based Learning which is scheduled to begin in August, 2012.  This was developed in conjunction with Sara Adkins, Pharm D.  Dr. Carlsen was appointed as an adjunct Associate Professor at the OSU College of Pharmacy on July 1, 2011.

      Dr. Meyer: Developed online module,  Interprofessional Geriatric Health Care, for GM Block.

    • Dr. Meyer co-taught a course since Fall, 2006, entitled Interprofessional Rural Gerontology (HLTH369G) with faculty from the Department of Social Work and College of Health and Human Sciences.

    • Ellen Peterson facilitates a monthly CPE/CME video-conference series, “Geriatric Noon Seminars,” that is attended by healthcare  and mental health providers at7 sites.

    • Drs. Gau and Meyer collaborated with COGAP, the Ohio Geriatrics Society, and the Western Reserve Geriatric Education Center on the 2011 and 2012 Salt Fork Statewide Geriatric Medicine CME

    • Drs. Carlsen and Meyer collaborated with COGAP, the Ohio Geriatrics Society, and the Western Reserve Geriatric Education Center on the 2010 Salt Fork Statewide Geriatric Medicine CME Conference for primary care physicians. Drs. Carlsen and Meyer, along with Ellen Peterson participated in the conference in October, 2010. 

    • The Department of Geriatric Medicine/ Gerontology along with Community Health Programs conduct  Rural Senior Outreaches and glaucoma screenings. We utilize an interprofessional approach, drawing students, faculty and providers from a number of disciplines. Between November, 2007 and December, 2010, we held Outreaches in 10 different communities with nearly 320 people participating (256 ≥ 50 years old).     • Heckman: Telephone IPT Intervention for HIV-Infected Rural Persons (4 years, $1.8 million).  Received a score of 24 and is at the 12th percentile.  Grant began on December 1, 2009.

    • March 2005 - Faculty and staff members collaborated with four other medical schools in Ohio to submit a grant renewal that funds the Western Reserve Geriatric Center. The five year grant will bring $60,000 to the Department of GM/G to support interprofessional educational programs for faculty, students and providers.
