What are the
academic affiliations of the Institute?
The Institute is
housed under the College of Osteopathic Medicine, but is an
interdisciplinary Institute with faculty affiliates spanning
4 colleges (Medicine, Health and Human Services,
Engineering, Arts and Sciences) and 8 departments
(Biomedical Sciences, Family Medicine, Geriatric Medicine,
Mechanical Engineering, Psychology, Physical Therapy,
Recreation and Sport Sciences).
What are the
research initiatives of the Institute?
The
Institute supports research aimed at improving the
diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and
injuries of the neuromusculoskeletal system and its
component tissues. Additionally, the Institute fosters a
transdisciplinary approach to educational training that
provides a comprehensive understanding of the integrative
systems. Institute investigators pursue internationally
recognized research programs in:
·
Aging
·
Exercise and environmental physiology
·
Low
back pain
·
Neural control of movement
·
Skeletal muscle physiology and function
·
Sweat
gland biology
·
Virtual reality simulation for medical training
How do I
submit a grant thru the Institute, and what are the
advantages and disadvantages of doing this?
To
submit a grant thru the Institute all one needs to do is
simply select "Neuromusculoskeletal Research, Institute”
under the Centers and Institutes link on the OU-LEO
transmittal site. The Ohio University Indirect
Redistribution Formula allots 7% of F&A to Departments and
14% to Colleges regardless of whether a grant is submitted
to an Institute- thus there is NO disadvantage to your home
department or college for submitting thru an Institute.
However, the OU redistribution formula allots 4% less to the
PI if a grant is submitted thru an Institute. Our Institute
is committed to facilitating and encouraging grant
submission thru the Institute, and as such we (the
Institute) will reallocate 8% of the Institute’s 30% return
back to the PI - thus making the PI redistribution 22% when
grants are submitted through the Institute. So, in essence
the PI actually gets a larger return for submitting thru the
Institute, with no effect on the Department or College. It
is the University, specifically the Vice President for
Research Office, that receives less of the indirect when
submitting thru the Institute.

Does the
Institute have internal funding available to support pilot
studies?
Yes, the
Institute provides both personnel and direct financial
resources to affiliate scientists.
For more information and to request these resources please
complete our pilot support grant application.
Does the
Institute provide education opportunities for students?
Students are
actively involved in affiliate faculty members laboratories,
and students interested in getting involved in research are
encouraged to contact our affiliate faculty directly. The
Institute also sponsors and administers the Sybert Scholars
Fellowship. This annual research award provides support to
medical students performing research in the area of
orthopedics. The next award cycle application will be
posted in June 2010. Please check back at a later date for
a link to the application. Additionally, the Institute
regularly organizes seminars and workshops that are open to
the Ohio University community.
How is the
Institute funded?
Funding for the
Institute comes from a variety of sources. Our main
infrastructure support is provided from a grant by the
Osteopathic Heritage Foundation.
