Eligibility.
Two 2nd year students will be selected during the summer of
Year II for
participation during the summer of Year III. |

Duration.
Four-week tutorial in Geriatric Medicine in
Edinburgh, Scotland. |

Tutorial Dates.
July or August. Specific dates are
determined by Dr. Colin Currie, Department of
Geriatric Medicine, University of Edinburgh. |

Location.
University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland, an
institution responsible for the early development of
geriatric medicine as a distinct entity. |

|
|
Activities. Dr. Currie is the OU-HCOM liaison for
this program. Students can work with the geriatrics
faculty at the Royal Infirmary and in rehabilitation
and long-term care facilities. |

|
Funding. A
stipend is provided by the Department of Geriatric
Medicine / Gerontology to help cover
expenses. Students may incur some expense comparable
to any rotation away from their home site. |

|
Credit. The tutorial is credited as a Clinical Elective (OCOM
891), but it does NOT count toward the
eight weeks allotted for out-of-state rotations.
Also, it does NOT replace the
Geriatric Medicine Clerkship, OCOM 893, which
should be completed before the tutorial. |

Essay.
Following the tutorial (end of October), students
must submit an 8-10 page essay comparing some aspect
of health care for the elderly in the U.S. (Ohio)
and Scotland (Edinburgh). You are welcome to read
papers submitted by previous students:. A
copy of the presentation they gave to the OU-HCOM
community in October 2005 is also available as a
handout. |

Essay Literature
Review. Select an essay
topic from the
attached list. Topics not included
on the list may also be appropriate. Prepare a
preliminary 3-5 page review of the literature on the
topic. Please include the bibliography with your
literature review.

Complete an
International Programs
Application, an
application for the
2009 Charles J Cannon Edinburgh Geriatric Tutorial
and submit it to the Office of International
Programs (304 Grosvenor Hall) along with the
essay
literature review and bibliography. |
