SHARE Kenya-Ohio is a clinical program during which students, faculty and clinicians deliver healthcare in rural Western Kenya.

SHARE Kenya-Ohio volunteers demonstrate their commitment

to providing healthcare for the rural people of a developing nation and have been making annual trips since 1997.

We gladly accept donations for the SHARE Kenya-Ohio program throughout the year. Because Ohio University is a tax-exempt institution, any donations made to the university on behalf of SHARE Kenya-Ohio may enable the donor to claim them as a tax-deductible donation as long as the proper guidelines are followed.

Program Description:

SHARE Kenya is 3-week clinical program in which students, faculty and clinicians deliver healthcare in rural Western Kenya. In 2006, participants shared in the celebration of a new free-standing clinic in Masara. The clinic was the culmination of a promise SHARE Kenya founder B.S. Bonyo, D.O. (’98), made as a child to help underserved Kenyans through medical care. The SHARE Kenya-Ohio experience is ideally suited for fourth year medical students, residents at any level, and advanced pharmacy, nursing and physical therapy students. The program also invites licensed physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and physical therapists. Journalists and/or photographers are also welcome.

As a participant in the SHARE Kenya-Ohio program, you will see a variety of clinical cases that are uncommon in the United States, including: leprosy, malaria, typhoid, filariasis, schistosomiasis, different presentations of HIV and TB, and many others.

During the program, time is set aside to become acquainted with our hosts and visit local sights. Other highlights include a safari just before returning to the United States. Some of the cultural experiences you will have an opportunity to participate in are: clinical rotations in local Kenyan hospital settings, various cultural activities, sampling a variety of authentic Kenyan cuisine, touring Western Kenya, Hippo watch on Lake Victoria, as well as many others.

Dates: Tentative 2009 program dates are November 27 - December 18, 2009. The dates may change due to flight availability and price. Please note that the full program fee will be charged to all participants, regardless of individual travel dates.
