SHARE Kenya-Ohio volunteers demonstrate their commitment to providing health care for the rural people of a developing nation. SHARE Kenya-Ohio has been making annual trips since 1997, with students, faculty and staff paying their own way to help others and become immersed in the local culture.

SHARE Kenya-Ohio is a clinical program during which students, faculty and clinicians deliver healthcare in rural Western Kenya.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead

Physician preceptors include any physician (DO or MD) R2+. All preceptors are required to complete a preceptor information form, sign a waiver form, obtain an international ID card (which provides emergency evacuation insurance) and to submit a copy of your passport and travel itinerary. Physicians are expected to carry their own malpractice insurance; they will not be covered by the OUCOM insurance policy. The college needs all of this information for legal and liability purposes. The forms will be sent to you after receipt of the application and PIF. You may not participate in SHARE Kenya-Ohio without fulfilling these requirements.

To ensure that we have an adequate number of physician preceptors, we are offering to pay a portion of expenses for a small number of preceptors. The budget will be determined by the number of students, but will most likely include airfare (your program fee will be reduced by the airfare amount). Physicians who are interested in such assistance are expected to travel with the students and remain in Kenya for the entire duration of the trip. They must agree to supervise 3-5 medical students, must be available for all clinics (excepting illness and unforeseen circumstances), write student evaluations and will be expected to rotate with other preceptors in non-clinic activities.

General Information: General information about the SHARE Kenya-Ohio 2008 program, anticipated budget, recommended reading list, Kenya travel tips, and a packing list are included for an idea of what to expect. Please also look over the 2008 travel checklist for pre-departure requirements. For background information about Kenya, the Luo culture and translation of common terms, please see About Kenya, prepared by Gary Snyder and Jaja Yogo.

Application Process: Applications will be accepted until September 5, 2008. Please contact Deborah Meyer   or Mary Dailey if you have any questions about the program. New preceptors must provide references with the application form. Residents will be required to set up a phone interview with Dr. Nicole Wadsworth, clinical director.
