International Mission to the Dominican Republic
The mountain villages
in the northern coast of the Dominican Republic
offer many opportunities for Physicians, Nurses,
Dentists, and students to learn what daily living is
like in a third world setting. This past year,
eleven committed Dominican people became
increasingly engaged as volunteers in the medical
and dental clinics as well as the home rebuilding
programs of Village Mountain Mission. These
volunteers assist the VMM team as support staff,
interpreters, and are eager to learn and advance
their health awareness skills. The Ohio University/
Village Mountain Mission collaborative program has
been successful in bringing health screening,
medical treatment, oral surgical services and dental
sealant services to these small villages with Ohio
University students being involved in all levels of
the program. |

| |
|
| This is
a clinical program which includes several rural
clinic days and health education. The purpose of the
clinics are to: 1) provide medical screening to the
village people, 2) give educational support for
disease detection, 3) recognize and treat medical
diseases and conditions. Participants will also have
the opportunity to participate in several cultural
and tourist activities. This program is ideally
suited to Third year medical students but first year
students will also be considered. Program cost is
approximately $2050. |

| |
|
Eligibility: This program is open to first, third,
and fourth year medical students. OUCOM third and
fourth year students will receive two weeks of
elective credit for participation in the program. |
