Students can arrange their own programs through church organizations, other universities, hospitals, American Medical Student Association, etc. This must be planned well in advance. The 4th year is the ideal time; rotations in the 3rd year can be made under special circumstances.

1st and 2nd year medical students

You will not receive any credit for participating in this experience. Also, you will NOT be covered under OUCOM malpractice insurance.

Please also contact Gillian Ice, PhD, MPH, Director of the Office of International Programs, to let us know where you are going. Here are some travel tips that you might find useful as you prepare for your trip. If you would like to give a presentation to the OU-COM community once you return, we would be glad to help you with the arrangements.

3rd and 4th year medical students

To obtain credit, you must complete both the international programs application and supplemental application for international medicine rotation or international research rotation. Your international preceptor must complete an information form (clinical or research) and you must provide us with the contact information for the hospital or university where you will be rotating so that we can initiate an affiliation agreement.

Once we receive a signed affiliation agreement, PIF form and your application has been approved by Dr. Ice, you will receive a packet containing the required paperwork, such as a waiver form and a checklist outlining all of your requirements. You must also fulfill all requirements for international medicine rotation or international research rotation.

Please contact Gillian Ice, PhD, MPH with any questions.
