Configuring your wireless network connection

Connecting to the OU-COM wireless network, which now supports the a, b, & g variations of the 802.11 Ethernet standard, requires an OU-COM network username and password. If you do not have these you will not be able to use the network. It is best to first connect your laptop to the network with a wired connection to assure that you can use your account name and password and to setup resources.

When you first connect to the OU-COM network settings will need to be checked or adjusted. Subsequent connections should not require these configuration steps.

The first step, assuming the laptop is on and has drivers installed for your wireless device, is to bring up the Wireless Network Connection window. You can do that by clicking on the wireless connection in the system tray usually found in the lower right corner of your display.

Click on the "View Wireless Networks" button.

That should bring up the Wireless Network Connection Window. You may need to click on the "Refresh network list" button on the left top but you should see the 'oucom' network displayed. There may be other network's listed. Highlight the 'oucom' network and then click on "Change advanced settings"

That brings up the "Wireless Network Connection Properties" select the "Wireless Networks" tab.

On that tab make certain that the "Use Windows to configure .... " checkbox is checked. Then click on the "Properties" button.

On the properties Association dialog tab change the "Network Authentication" to Open and the "Data encryption" to WEP. The checkbox "The key is provided for me automatically" needs to be checked.

On the "Protected EAP Properties" dialog uncheck the "Validate server certificate" checkbox. Chose the "Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) option in the "Select Authentication Method" drop down. Check the

Click on the "Configure" button to bring up the "EAP MSCHAPv2" dialog where the "Automatically use my Windows logon... " checkbox should be unchecked. Then Click on the "OK" button

When returned to the "Protected EAP Properties" dialog click on the "OK" button again.

Then select the connection tab and check the "Connect when this network is in range"  checkbox and click on the "OK" button.

On the "Wireless Network Connection Properties" click on the "Advanced" button.

On the "Advanced" dialog select "Access point (infrastructure) networks only". Then click on the "Close" button.

On the "Network Wireless Connection" click on the "Connect"

A progress bar will appear.

A balloon dialog should appear stating "Click here to select a certificate or other credentials for connection to the network oucom". Click on this balloon.

Enter your user name, password, and logon domain and then click on the "OK" button.

The progress bar should appear again.

Then the oucom network should appear with the message saying "Connected". You may see a "Validating identity" prior to the "Connected" message.

You should then be on the network. You can close the window. Subsequent sessions should not require all these steps.
