OU-COM boasts record attendance at D.O. Day on the Hill
More than 50 first- and second-year OU-COM students will pile on a bus bound for Washington, D.C., to attend the April 24 D.O. Day on the Hill, arranged by the American Osteopathic Association. This annual event provides an opportunity for D.O.s and osteopathic medical students to educate Members of Congress on osteopathic medicine and lobby about health policy issues, such as Medicare physician payment.
Starla Lyles, OMS-I, is coordinating OU-COM’s trip to D.O. Day on the Hill, with support from the Ohio Osteopathic Association. She attributes this year’s high turn-out in part to the upcoming presidential election. “A lot of health care issues are up in the air that medical students should be aware of,” said Lyles, political affairs chair for the OU-COM chapter of the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA).
OU-COM students prepared for the trip in part through the Policy Puzzle lecture series. The Policy Puzzle series, launched in 2002 by Associate Director of Student Affairs Ann Brieck, aims to increase students’ knowledge of health care policy. Imram Akbar, OMS-II, facilitated the 2008 Policy Puzzle series with support from SOMA and the American Medical Student Association. Policy Puzzle hosted Shawn Martin, AOA director of governmental relations, on March 10.
Once in Washington, osteopathic advocates participate in a morning legislative briefing, attend scheduled meetings with Members of Congress and their staff, and report the results at a debriefing room.

Hosting the ceremony were Dan Silbiger, OMS-II, president of the Student Government Association (SGA), and Crystal Woodside, OMS-II, president of Sigma Sigma Phi (SSP). SGA and SSP cosponsored and arranged the event, which included dinner and desert. A committee of first- and second-year students selected the winning nominees for each award.
