OU-COM remembers Joan “Jody” Galbreath Phillips
Joan “Jody” Galbreath Phillips, who served on the College of Osteopathic Medicine’s advisory and development boards and established the college’s Phillips Medal of Public Service, died Monday, April 21, in Columbus at the age of 83.
Philips earned her bachelor’s in education from Ohio University in 1946 and was married to the late J. Wallace "Wally" Phillips, an honorary alumnus since 1983.
In 1974, Jody Phillips became the first woman ever to chair the Ohio University Board of Trustees and was the second woman to serve on the board. She funded the Joan and Wallace Phillips Academic Services Center in Peden Tower and permanent outdoor lighting at Peden Stadium, and she chaired the national campaign to raise funds for Peden Tower.
In February, Ohio Athletics announced the establishment of The Jody Galbreath Phillips Giving Circle, an endowment for women's athletics in conjunction with the university's Women in Philanthropy. That same month, Women in Philanthropy presented her with the Leona Hughes Inspiration Award for her personal integrity and long-term commitment to the university.
“Mrs. Phillips, her late husband Wally and family have been long-time supporters of OU-COM. We have truly lost a wonderful lady and friend,” said George Dunigan, director of government relations for OU-COM and the Ohio Osteopathic Association. “Mrs. Phillips will always be a huge part of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family.”
Phillips is survived by her four children: Dianne, Deborah, John Wallace and Cynthia.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Ohio University Foundation and directed to funds named in Phillips' honor that support the College of Osteopathic Medicine, Women in Philanthropy or Intercollegiate Athletics. Checks (designated in memory of Jody Phillips) may be sent to The Ohio University Foundation, McGuffey Hall, Athens, OH 45701. Gifts also may be made by calling 800-592-FUND or e-mailing giving@ohio.edu. Secure online giving is available at www.ohio.edu/give.
Class of 2012 receives OU-COM welcome
The 2008-2009 incoming class of OU-COM students gathered at Irvine Hall on Saturday, April 19 to kick off OU-COM’s annual PreCOM orientation event for incoming medical students.
“Students familiarized themselves with the college, the campus, the osteopathic educational program and Athens housing. Most importantly, they got the chance to connect with OU-COM faculty, staff and students,” said Ginny Valentin, associate director for admissions.
About 150 people attended the day-long event, including admitted students, their families, faculty, staff and current OU-COM students.
Whitney Gorton of Woodstock, Ohio, an incoming OMS I student, said that the "classmate scavenger hunt" was her favorite part of PreCOM because she was able “to see the silly side” of her new classmates.
Other events included fittings for white coats; a welcome by John Schriner, Ph.D., director of admissions; a tour of OU-COM's mobile health unit; and informative sessions about such issues as financial aid and housing. During lunch, keynote speaker Jack Brose, D.O., dean of OU-COM, addressed students and their families.
Gorton said that she and her soon-to-be classmates were impressed by the activities and networking opportunities that PreCOM made available.
“It was great having ‘alone time’ with the other students to get to know each other, and my fiancé enjoyed meeting people who will be under a similar stress as him while we all make our way through medical school,” Gorton said.
IPAC gains non-profit status
The regional children’s rural health network Integrating Professionals for Appalachian Children (IPAC) recently gained non-profit charity status. This qualifies the network and its member organizations to apply for additional funding streams, and it makes individual donations to IPAC tax-deductible. Those benefits will help sustain and expand the efforts of IPAC over time, according to Jane Hamel-Lambert, Ph.D., IPAC president and director of interdisciplinary mental health education at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM).

Faculty Development Tidbit: Start/Finish on Time…! (Adapted from Walker Teaching Resource Center)
“Don’t let minds drift or conversations begin. Begin on time and plan activities that take the entire class period, especially at the beginning of the semester. Don’t let students even begin to think that you don’t value your time in class by cutting class short or “letting” them out early. Respect their time and yours by starting and ending at the stated times to the best of your ability.”
You can find more “Teaching Tips” at your faculty development web resource site: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm.
If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, send it to me, and I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit (all Faculty Development Tidbits courtesy of Steve Davis, Ph.D., director of faculty development, www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd).
