OU-COM will welcome the class of 2012—the largest and among the most accomplished in the college’s history—during the college’s 33rd Convocation Ceremony, Sat., Aug. 16.

OU-COM “Tapped Out” project to save money, reduce waste

OU-COM’s student government has presented the class of 2012 with their own personal, reusable water bottles emblazoned with the college logo.

Calling the project “Tapped Out,” OU-COM Student Government President Chad Keller, OMS II, and Vice-President Scott Yoho, OMS II, came up with this cost-effective, eco-friendly welcome gift.

Student government, in coordination with student affairs, typically presents lunch lectures—with food and bottled water provided—about twice a week. The lectures attract as many as 150 students.

By not serving bottled water, Keller estimates that the college will avoid adding 12,000 water bottles to the Athens-Hocking landfill—in addition to saving the student government $2,500 during the upcoming school year.

“We wanted to come up with something to do that would help the school out,” Keller said. “We realized this would save money and help our campus be a littler greener.”

Faculty Development Tidbit: Key teaching behaviors, Part I

I attended a “Systematic approach for teaching improvement” session at the recent International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) conference. One topic was “learning climate.” Creating a stimulating classroom environment ranks high among “key components and teaching behaviors” conducive to a good learning climate. Here are some tips:

·                    Show enthusiasm for topic and for learners.

·                    Show interest through body language.

·                    Use an animated voice.

·                    Provide a comfortable and, when possible, active physical environment.

You can find more “Teaching Tips” at your faculty development web resource site: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm. If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, send it to me. I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit (Steve Davis, Ph.D., USAF Major (Ret), director of faculty development).
