Convocation welcomes students, honors Phillips Medal awardees

Make the practice of medicine personal, the class of 2012 was told Saturday at the college’s 33rd Convocation Ceremony.

“Today starts your journey, which will involve years of hard work and study,” said keynote speaker Anne Pope, 10th federal co-chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission. “But with this essential education and training, let’s not forget the heart of medicine. As a doctor, your focus is and always should be about people.”

Highlighting the event were the White Coat Ceremony and the presentation of the Phillips Medal of Public Service to two individuals who have made outstanding contributions to healthcare, education and/or public service.

CORE dinner welcomes student doctors

The Class of 2010 received their official CORE welcome on Thurs., Aug. 14. The event keynote speaker was Jane D’Isa-Smith, D.O. (’93), who shared some of her memorable experiences as a third-year student.

“Keep an open mind, and learn as much as you can from each day, each patient and each encounter,” she advised.

At the dinner, Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Awards were presented by officers of the Class of 2010.

Winners included:

Class president Kate Ruda, OMS II, also presented Kathy Trace, R.N., M.P.H., director of community health services with a check for $800, to purchase an HbAiC analyzer (used to monitor diabetes) for OU-COM’s Free Clinic.

According to Ruda, class members have volunteered more than 9,000 combined hours in service to the Athens community. “That is over 4,000 hours more than any other class,” she said.

Each class member also received an embroidered white coat, a pen stylus and pen light.

Gorscak honored

Kelly Gorscak received the bi-annual Outstanding Employee Award from the Department of Administrative and Financial Services.

Her nominators describe her as very knowledgeable about Ohio University and OU-COM policies and willing to help with any accounting issue—always with a smile on her face. As one of her nominators put it, “Kelly rocks!”

Faculty Development Tidbit: Key teaching behaviors, Part II

Here’s more from the “Systematic approach for teaching improvement” session I attended at the 2008 International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) conference. Student interactivity ranks among “key components and teaching behaviors” conducive to a good learning climate.

Here are some tips:

·        Look at learners.

·        Listen to learners.

·        Encourage learners to participate (safely).

·        Avoid monopolizing discussion.

·        Establish the habit of engaging students.

·        Provide support through availability—of your time and your materials.

You can find more “Teaching Tips” at your faculty development web resource site: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm. If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, send it to me. I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit. (Courtesy of Steve Davis, Ph.D., USAF Major (Ret), director of faculty development).
