NEWS

Faculty, staff ID Badges arrive

Identification badges for all OU-COM faculty and staff will be delivered to various college departments during the week of December 15. Badges will be mailed to the CORE sites. CORE personnel are asked to wear the badges when visiting the Athens campus.

Beth Maxon, P.H.R., director of human resources and administrative services, said the badges must be worn at all times while in college buildings.

The badges will identify OU-COM personnel for security purposes and allow access to operate copy machines in OU-COM buildings. Eventually, the badges—which have a magnetic strip on the back—will be used in swipe locks that will be installed on the doors of Grosvenor Hall.

The badges feature a photograph of the employee and his or her name, academic credentials, college name and department or unit affiliation.

If lost or damaged, employees must replace both the OU-COM badge and their OU identification card, Maxon explained, since both are electronically connected. Replacements are available through the technology depot in Baker University Center, room 112.

University showcase connects researchers with venture capitalists

Last week marked Ohio University’s second annual BioVenture Showcase, which exposes university research to venture capitalists and other sources of external funding. OU-COM co-sponsored the day-long event in Walter Hall.

Ohio University alumnus Rick Hawkins, co-founder of Sensus, the company that produced the drug Somavert, delivered the keynote address.

Hawkins created Sensus with OU-COM researcher John Kopchick, Ph.D., Goll-Ohio Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology, whose laboratory findings led to Somavert, the drug used to treat the form of gigantism called acromegaly. About 90 percent of OU’s research revenues stem from Somavert licensing fees. OU-COM has received about $1.4 million from those royalties, Dean Jack Brose, D.O., reported earlier this year.

As a result of these royalties, Forbes magazine recently ranked OU fourth in the country for the amount of licensing revenues it generates in relation to its research investment. “I don’t think the university fully understands just how important that list is,” Hawkins said in his speech.

Two OU-COM faculty members presented at the showcase. Frank Schwartz, M.D., associate professor of specialty medicine, talked about artificial intelligence software for diabetes management; and Rathindra Bose, Ph.D., professor of biomedical sciences, discussed new platinum-phosphate anticancer compounds.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Faculty Development Tidbit – Zen and the art of teaching

Here are some teaching tips from the book Presentation Zen by Garr Reynolds, a leading authority on presentation design and delivery.

Chapter 3: Planning Analog to Prepare:

·        For greater focus, try turning off the computer and going analog.

·        Slow down your busy mind to see your problem and goals more clearly.

·        Find time alone to see the big picture… and lay it out so your audience knows what piece of the puzzle you’re working with/on.

·        Use paper and pens or a whiteboard first to record and sketch your ideas (try mind mapping: http://www.mind-mapping.co.uk/).

·        Key questions: What’s your main point? Why does it matter?

·        If your audience remembers only one thing, what should it be?

·        Preparing a detailed handout keeps you from feeling compelled to cram everything into your visuals.

If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, please send it to me, and I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit.
