OU-COM faculty research exhibited at Dairy Barn
The paleontological field research of Nancy Stevens, Ph.D., and Patrick O’Connor, Ph.D., both assistant professors of biomedical sciences, is featured in an exhibit, “Tanzania in Deep Time,” at the Dairy Barn Southeastern Ohio Cultural Arts Center in Athens.
Stevens’ and O’Connor’s work, which sequences the ancient biodiversity of the Rukwa Rift Basin of Southwestern Tanzania, is an international, interdisciplinary effort involving researchers from several institutions in the USA and Tanzania. Faculty and students investigated the chronology and interplay of life across the East African Rift System, uncovering species and events new to science.
Discoveries from Stevens’ and O’Connor’s paleontological expeditions are featured in the exhibit, which launched last summer at the Tanzanian National Museum. The Dairy Barn marks the first time the exhibit is on public display in the USA.
“Tanzania in Deep Time” opened Friday and will run until Feb. 22, with subsequent visits scheduled for local school groups. For more information on the exhibit and related events, see http://www.dairybarn.org/exhibitions/index.php?section=211&page=&item=114.
The research project was sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the National Geographic Society's Committee for Research and Exploration, the L.S.B. Leakey Foundation, the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Ohio University African Studies Program.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Faculty Development Tidbit – Zen and the art of teaching
Here are some teaching tips from the book Presentation Zen by Garr Reynolds, a leading authority on presentation design and delivery.
Chapter 2: Creativity, Limitations, and Constraints:
· Preparing, designing and delivering a presentation is a creative act, and you are a creative being.
· Creativity requires an open mind and willingness to take risks.
· Restrictions and limitations are not the enemy; they are a great ally.
· As you prepare a presentation, exercise restraint and always keep these three words in mind: simplicity, clarity, brevity.
