Jeffrey A. Stanley, D.O. (’82), inducted into the American Osteopathic Association Mentor Hall of Fame

Society of Alumni and Friends President Jeffrey A. Stanley, D.O. (’82), was recently inducted into the AOA Mentor Hall of Fame. Stanley, a CORE clinical professor, was honored for excellence in mentorship and support to osteopathic medical students, interns, residents and new-in-practice physicians, and promoting the spirit of osteopathic philosophy, principles and practice.

“As a teacher, Stanley enriches the educational experiences of OU-COM students through his frequent guest lectures and visits to the college,” said Jill Harman, director of alumni affairs. “He has a personal interest in our students and takes them on rotations at South Pointe Hospital, where he is chief of vascular surgery and chief of staff. He was our 2005 Outstanding Alumnus and is a great role model.”

The AOA Mentor Hall of Fame is dedicated to recognizing excellence in mentoring by those, such as Stanley, who serve as trusted advisors to members of the osteopathic profession in the tradition established by A.T. Still.

Faculty Development Tidbit: “How to Get Students Actively Thinking In A Lecture Situation”

A major problem with lecture is that students assume a passive, non-thinking, information receiving role. If they are to remember and use the information, they need to be actively engaged in thinking about the content presented. One easy and effective device is the “Minute Paper.” The Minute Paper is, as its title indicates, a paper written in one (to three) minute(s). Here’s how:

Announce at the beginning of the class that you will interrupt your lecture midway through the period so that students may write a one-minute paper on a topic derived from the lecture or that you will ask them at the end of the lecture to write about the most important thing they learned. As an alternative, you could ask them to write the most important thing they learned from a previous lecture. Use this occasionally to help students more acutely reflect on and integrate lecture content into their active knowledge bases.
