ANNOUNCEMENTS

Talent Follies, Friday, Feb 29

Don’t forget to attend OU-COM’s favorite talent show, Talent Follies, a yearly event co-sponsored by SOMA and Sigma Sigma Phi, this Friday, Feb. 29, 7 to 10 p.m., Irvine 194. Talent Follies provides an opportunity for students, staff, and faculty to showcase their talents and gifts. In the past it has been graced by the blues stylings of Peter Dane, D.O., as well the rock ’n’ roll talents of Janet Burns, D.O. (’95).

And if you have a talent you want to share, it’s not too late to join the fun! Sign up is in the Learning Resource Center. If you cannot make it to the LRC, contact Sherice Lawrence (sl104106@ohio.edu) or Liset Estanislao (le243706@ohio.edu) to sign up. Tickets are $3 in advance (contact Andrew Koch, ak224407@ohio.edu); $5 at the door. All proceeds benefit Good Works Inc. Good Works provides shelter, education and life-skills training to the homeless living in the Athens community and now is in its 28th year.

Had an OMM session lately? Ever had one?

The section of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) is requesting your presence as “real patients” for the second-year osteopathic medical students’ OMM lab. The lab takes place Wednesday, March 5, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. Your participation is highly valued by our students, and participants will experience osteopathic manipulative treatment and, perhaps, experience some of the health benefits that come from that.

Students are closely supervised by faculty and fellows during the lab. This OMM experience usually consists of some elements of history taking, examination and gentle manipulative treatment specifically designed to address any diagnostic findings at that time. Participants remain clothed and all modesties are respected. Loose fitting clothing, however, is recommended for all, and specifically, we ask that women wear slacks, shorts or sweat pants/pajama bottoms. Following the lab, you will have an opportunity to provide feedback about your experience.

Questions? Please contact Stevan A. Walkowski, D.O. (’89), (walkowski@oucom.ohiou.edu, 593-2231).

Interested in SHARE Kenya?

An informational program on the Student Health Assistance Rural Experience Kenya (SHARE) program will be presented at noon on Monday, Feb. 25, by the 2007 participants. Over each winter break SHARE Kenya, founded by Benson Bonyo, D.O. (’98), brings much needed medical care to thousands of Kenyans in rural areas during a multi-week mission. Today’s program will be held in 199 Irvine Hall, and pizza will be provided.

Rural Health Senior Outreach Day this Friday in Coolville

This Friday, Feb. 29 (Sadie Hawkins Day, by the way), a team of OU-COM physicians, medical professionals and students will travel to the Coolville United Methodist Church for the college’s Rural Health Senior Outreach Day.

“We really encourage faculty to bring other students,” said Debbie Meyer, Ph.D., R.N., a coordinator for the event. “It helps the students as an inter-professional experience.”

From 9 a.m. to noon, seniors can talk one-on-one with health professionals and students and take advantage of free screenings for glaucoma, cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and – new for this event – hearing and speech. The first Rural Health Senior Outreach Day of the 2007-08 year, held Nov. 30 in Albany, pulled in 32 seniors — ranging in age from 52 to 83 – 23 of whom had glaucoma screenings thanks to the National Student Sight Savers Program coordinated by Athens optometrist Susan Quinn, O.D. Thirteen medical students assisted with the glaucoma screenings and presented educational material. In the past, a movement specialist, a diabetic specialist, a pharmacist and a librarian – who gave online search tutorials – have all helped out as well.

The Athens Foundation, Sisters of St. Joseph Charitable Fund, the Heritage Foundation and Friends of the Congressional Glaucoma Caucus provide funds and equipment for this health fair.

For Athens Faculty and Staff (ONLY): Book and Journal Request Service Now Online

Alden Library is piloting a new service with OU-COM which will allow you to make online requests for books and bound journals from the main library.

These items will be checked out to you and delivered to the LRC. This is similar to a collaboration which has operated for many years between the LRC and the main library, but the difference to you is this: you now make your request online. First, fill out this form and return it via fax or campus mail as the instructions indicate, then go to this Web page to complete the process.

Faculty Development Tidbit: “DON’T FEAR SILENCE”

Students eventually will talk. While we may think the silence is long, students need time to process your questions and come up with answers. Give them a chance to think and they eventually will talk. In fact, you may want to silently and slowly count to 10 or 15 to force yourself to give enough time for student to think and respond.
