Watson named AOA Educator of the Year

Keith Watson, D.O., associate dean of graduate medical education, received the Educator of the Year Award from the American Osteopathic Association and the American Osteopathic Foundation at their annual House of Delegates meeting held Saturday, July 19, in Chicago.

The award honors individuals who demonstrate significant and long-standing contributions to the advancement of osteopathic students and the osteopathic medical profession.

“I am very honored,” Watson said. “I see this award as reflecting all the individuals at OU-COM because we do this together, and it’s important for all of us to share this honor.”

New V.P. for research joins OU-COM faculty

On July 1, cancer researcher Rathindra Bose, Ph.D., joined OU-COM as professor of biomedical sciences—in addition to his duties as OU’s vice president for research and creative activity and dean of the university’s new Graduate College. He will continue his cancer research in a joint appointment with OU-COM and the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Chemistry.

Anita Martin, assistant director of communication, sat down with Bose to learn about the man behind the many titles. To read that Q&A, go to http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/news/stories/bose/.

A class called “Ensuring OMM (osteopathic manipulative medicine) competency in osteopathic residency programs” attracted about 40 participants during the Ohio Osteopathic Association convention at the Hilton Columbus June 20, reports Becky Martin, osteopathic principles and practices (OPP) coordinator.

OMM faculty David Eland, D.O., professor of family medicine, and Stevan Walkowski, D.O., assistant professor of family medicine, led the four-hour course, which offered an osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) refresher and discussed coding and billing documentation, as well as resident assessment strategies to meet the AOA OMT core competency.

Free reading of Biechler’s play

“Confessions of a Reluctant Caregiver,” an original play by Merri Biechler, assistant for academic affairs, will be read next Mon. at Irvine Hall.

The play, which centers on a young woman who returns home to care for her terminally ill father, has been used as a teaching tool for OU-COM medical students. It won the 2007 Jane Chambers Student Playwriting Award and was a finalist for both the 2007 Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Award and the Princess Grace Award.

A reading of “Confessions” was staged earlier this summer at Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville.

Biechler earned her MFA in playwriting from Ohio University in 2007.

Faculty Development Tidbit: Ask for Student Questions

Ask students to create and submit to you their own test questions. Distribute the students’ questions for the class to use as a study tool, and select some student questions for your test. You might also want to discuss some of the “good” questions vs. “poor” questions from those submitted. This can prompt a discussion of higher levels of thinking.

You can find more “Teaching Tips” at your faculty development web resource site: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm.

All Faculty Development Tidbits are adapted from Walker Teaching Resource Center by Steve Davis, Ph.D., director of faculty development.

If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, please send it to Davis for inclusion in future Faculty Development Tidbits.
