Appalachian Health Care Access Project wins federal grant

The Appalachian Health Care Access Project received an $189,677 grant from the Department of Health and Human Services last week.

According to co-principal investigator, Jane Hamel-Lambert, Ph.D., director of interdisciplinary mental health, the grant will expand preventive health services and improve understanding of regional health needs.

In addition to increasing screenings for breast, cervical and colon cancer, the project will enhance chronic illness management and health education through the Ohio Free Clinic and the Diabetes and Endocrine Center.

The money also will be used to conduct a seven-county Health Needs Assessment Survey, building on previous OU-COM surveys of ten other Appalachian Ohio counties. Once completed, the surveys will inform targeted health interventions.

This project represents collaboration among OU-COM’s Community Health Programs and its Appalachian Rural Health Institute, as well as the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs.
