Espinoza honored by students

            At their June graduation banquets, both interns and residents of family medicine at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center (Toledo) independently named Nicholas Espinoza, D.O. (‘90), the site’s CORE assistant dean, as Outstanding Preceptor of the Year.

“It has been a very rewarding year, and I really enjoy seeing the young doctors appreciate the guidance that I am able to pass along,” Espinoza said.

 

Schriner delivers keynote address at conference

            John Schriner, Ph.D., director of admissions, was one of four keynote speakers at the National Association of Advisors for the Health Profession national meeting in Chicago on June 29. He spoke on “Professionalism: Implications and expectations for the future health care professional.” About 300 people attended the lecture.

 

More OU-COM highlights from the OOA convention:

            Elected to the Ohio Osteopathic Association’s executive committee were: John Ramey, D.O. (’92), as treasurer and Ray Miller, D.O. (’84), as member-at-large. They join on the committee Barbara Bennett, D.O. (’84), president, and Christopher Loyke, D.O. (’88), president-elect. Mary Schreck (wife of Edward Schreck, D.O., assistant professor of family medicine) was installed as president of the advocates.

Anthony Chila, D.O., professor of osteopathic manipulative medicine, was one of 15 recipients of the association’s Life Membership Award.

            Timothy Hogan, D.O., associate professor of family medicine, won the convention grand prize of $2,500, while Nicholas Landry, D.O. (’96), took second prize: a two night stay in the African Queen Suite, water park admission and dinner at the Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, Ohio, the site of next year’s convention.

            In the 2008 OOA/CORE Poster Competition, Timothy Heckman, Ph.D., professor of geriatric medicine, tied for first place in biomedical/clinical research, taking home a $1000 prize for his poster, “Do African-Americans and whites respond equally well to headache treatments?: Findings from a longitudinal, naturalistic study.” The other winner was K. Daniel Miller, D.O., a resident at Grandview Medical Center (Dayton), who also received $1,000 for his poster, “Nuchal cord and neonatal outcome.”

            In case reports, Jaime Rehmann, OMS IV, won second place and $500 for her poster, “A cause of recurrent pulmonary infections in a 12-year-old.” The first-place winner was Safi Faruqui, D.O., a resident at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center (Toledo), for his poster, “Two cases of unusual coronal lunate fractures,” for which he received $1,000.

EVENTS

Ergonomics and Work Position

            Anthony Chila, D.O., professor of OMM, will describe proper position for computer work and discuss proper respiration and self-administered exercises.

 

Open house: Interdisciplinary Institute for Neuromusculoskeletal Research

Visit the Virtual Haptic Back Laboratory to see and feel a virtual reality simulation of the human back—developed by OU scientists and currently used exclusively by OU-COM to train medical students in palpatory diagnosis.

For demonstrations of other virtual reality pilot projects, stop into the Computer Modeling and Analysis Laboratory.

Check out the Neuromuscular Physiology Laboratory to learn about transcranial magnetic stimulation, which elicits action potentials directly from the human brain.

Finally, visit the Imaging and Medical Examination Suite to watch your skeletal muscles contract in real time using ultrasound imaging.

Presenters include John Howell, Ph.D., associate professor of physiology, and Brian Clark, Ph.D., assistant professor of neuromuscular biology and the new director of IINR.

 

 

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

New hires

Please welcome Denise House, research technician, to the Department of Biomedical Sciences. She began her work with Ramiro Malgor, Ph.D., assistant professor of pathology, July 1. You can reach House in 220 Irvine Hall or 593.0294. 

 

Please welcome Rathindra Bose, Ph.D., who began his appointment as OU vice president for research and creative activity and dean of the Graduate College July 1. Bose also serves as professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, with laboratory space in Konneker Research.

 

 

New appointments

Brian Clark, Ph.D., assistant professor of neuromuscular biology, is now also the director of the Interdisciplinary Institute for Neuromusculoskeletal Research (IINR) in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. He began as director July 1.

 

Nicole Wadsworth, D.O., assistant professor of family medicine, has been appointed assistant dean for pre-clinical education in the Office of Academic Affairs. Her appointment began July 1.
