Bennett installed as OOA president
Highlights from the Ohio Osteopathic Association’s 110th annual convention included several OU-COM connections.
The OOA installed Barbara Bennett, D.O. (’84), as president and Christopher Loyke, D.O. (’88), clinical associate professor at South Pointe Hospital, as president-elect. Bennett succeeds William Emlich, Jr., D.O. (’86), clinical professor at Doctors Hospital. The OU-COM Society of Alumni and Friends hosted a reception honoring Bennett and Emlich during the convention.
Also, Carl Denbow, Ph.D., Family Health® radio program’s special media project director, and Katherine “Toni” Clark, D.O. (88), clinical professor at Grandview Medical Center, received special awards.
Denbow received the Meritorious Service Award, which recognizes non-physicians for outstanding accomplishments in service to the profession. Co-founder of the Family Health® radio program, Denbow started at OU-COM in 1978.
Clark received the Ohio State Society of the American Osteopathic Family Physicians Distinguished Service Award, recognizing her leadership in family medicine.
The OU-COM Society of Alumni and Friends, Family Health ® radio and the OU-COM Health Policy Fellowship displayed exhibits, with the Family Health® radio exhibit winning the “Judges Choice Award.”
Among OU-COM faculty and alumni to present at the conference were: Timothy Barreiro, D.O. (’97), clinical assistant professor at St. Joseph Health Center; Dean Jack Brose, D.O.; Robert Cain, D.O. (’86), clinical professor at Grandview Medical Center; Associate Dean Peter Dane, D.O.; Ben Graef, D.O. (’03), clinical assistant professor at Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital; George Seese, III, D.O. (’87), clinical professor at Affinity Medical Center; Jay Shubrook, Jr., D.O. (‘96), assistant professor of family medicine; Christopher Simpson, D.O., associate professor and chair of family medicine; and Stevan Walkowski, D.O. (’89), assistant professor of family medicine.
Trustees tour college facilities
Members of the Ohio University Board of Trustees visited the college Thursday, June 26.
After a presentation by Dean Jack Brose, D.O., about the history of osteopathic medicine and an overview of OU-COM and its faculty, staff, students, research and community service, the trustees toured Grosvenor and Irvine Halls, highlighting various technology used in the college.
Larry Witmer, Ph.D., professor of biomedical sciences, showed the trustees the anatomy lab; Steven Walkowski, D.O., assistant professor of family medicine, showed the OMM lab; Brian Clark, Ph.D., assistant professor of neuromuscular biology, and Robert Conatser, M.S., lab research associate for biomedical sciences, showed the Interdisciplinary Institute for Neuromusculoskeletal Research; and finally Nicole Wadsworth D.O., assistant professor of family medicine, and Pat Polinski, M.S., educational technologist for academic affairs, demonstrated computer technology and learning classrooms used by students. The trustees also watched a class in progress, talked with students studying in the Learning Resource Center and viewed construction of the Academic Research Center.
The visit concluded with a luncheon with the dean, faculty and students.
