ANNOUNCEMENTS

PreCOM begins Saturday, March 8

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” opens the invitation to PreCOM, reciting the well-known Chinese proverb. Almost half of the Class of 2012 will take that step this Saturday, March 8, at PreCOM, the college’s orientation for incoming students. PreCOM, which is in its third year, this weekend will give 90 students, family members and significant others the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the college, the campus, the osteopathic educational program and options for living in Athens. A second PreCOM session takes place April 19 and will accommodate the remainder of the class.

“This event is designed for students who are certain they’re attending OU-COM in the fall and for those who are still in the decision-making process,” says Ginny Valentin, associate director of admissions.

“I think it’s important for these students to have an opportunity to meet each other, as well as current students, faculty and staff. The supportive atmosphere at OU-COM is something we all work hard to provide, so it’s nice to be able to share this with incoming students and their families.”

PreCOM begins in Irvine Hall at 9:30 a.m. when students check in and are measured for white coats. Lunch will be served at Walter Hall.

Honduras International Program Presentation

You are invited to hear Doris Eggenberger, founder and director of Hospital Suizo in La Ceiba, Honduras, speak Wednesday, March 5 at 5 p.m. in Irvine 199. Eggenberger is on campus to share her work and meet with students and faculty who are interested in a new international clinical program in Honduras, tentatively scheduled for Nov. 1–15, 2008. David Drozek, D.O. (’83), plans to lead a general surgery brigade to be hosted by Hospital Suizo. Dinner will be served, but RSVPs are needed by March 3. Please let Mary Dailey know if you will attend (dailey@ohio.edu or 593-2183).

Editorial and Poster Support for Ohio University’s 7th Annual Student Research and Creative Activity Expo

The Ohio University Office of Research recently announced the registration for the 7th Annual Ohio University Research and Creative Activity Fair. Students can register online from Feb. 4 to April 4. To learn more about the expo or register, go to www.ohio.edu/research/students/ or contact Anna Rankin (research.expo@ohio.edu or 593-0802). If you plan to participate, please inform Jessica Wingett (wingett@oucom.ohiou.edu or 593-2336).

The CORE Research Office is available to assist OU-COM students who wish to participate in this year’s event. If you intend on presenting a poster at this year’s event, you are encouraged to contact Michael Weiser at the CORE Research Office (weiser@ohio.edu or 593-2322). Poster drafts can be sent to Michael Weiser for review and editing before they are printed.

More than 475 undergraduate, graduate, and medical students and post-doctoral fellows presented their original work at last year’s event. This year’s event, to be held at the Convocation Center on May 15, marks the biggest exhibition of student talent at Ohio University.

Call for Abstracts

The Ohio Osteopathic Association and the CORE cordially invite you to submit an abstract for a research poster for the OOA and CORE 2008 Research Poster Exhibition and Competition. Students, interns, residents, faculty, medical administrators and practicing physicians are invited to participate in this year's event. Participants must present their own poster. Posters for the accepted abstracts will be judged at the 110th Annual Ohio Osteopathic Meeting & Scientific Seminar June 19–22. The poster exhibition will be held on Saturday, June 21.

Abstract length should be no more than 250 words. The deadline for abstracts is March 28. Notification of acceptance is April 18. Information and resources can be found under the “Research” tab on the CORE website. Look under any category (Students and Future Residents, Interns and Residents, or Faculty) to find the link to research.

Abstracts may be submitted in two categories: 1) Bio-Medical/Clinical Research and 2) Single Case Study. Prizes will be awarded in each category. First prize is $1,000; second prize, $500. Please submit abstracts to Michael Weiser at weiser@ohio.edu by March 28.

Faculty Development Tidbit: “GET FEEDBACK FROM YOUR STUDENTS”

Periodically, take five minutes to have students (anonymously) fill out index cards answering the following question: “What’s the most significant thing you heard or the most significant thing that happened in class today?” Let students know that this doesn’t just mean something the instructor said or did — it could be any aspect of the class. Complete a card yourself. Later, read through the responses, select one of more that are provocative enough to be useful in subsequent classes, read them aloud, discuss the issues they raise, etc. These provide a good snapshot of what’s happening for students. Students’ choices are almost always very diverse and, not surprisingly, very different from what teachers have chosen as most significant. Inevitably, this exercise acts as a rudder to move teaching and learning closer to the learning of the students.
