OU-COM
observes National Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Week, March
24–28
Launched by the U.S.
Congress in 1971, AHEC recruits, trains and retains a health professions
workforce committed to providing and improving the health care of underserved
populations. Today 50 AHEC programs in more than 200 locations operate across
the country. OU-COM’s AHEC, the Consortium for Health Education in Appalachian
Ohio (CHEAO), is part of Community Health Programs (CHP) and is directed by
Kathy Trace, R.N., CHP
director; Missy Kemper, community
health nurse coordinator;
and Tracy McKibben, CHP
administrative associate.
In 2006, AHEC provided resources for more than 160 educational events,
coordinated more than 2,500 service learning hours that reached more than 1,650
people in rural areas; assisted with the coordination of health career
exploration for more than 40 middle school students in local schools; provided
more than $190,000 of free continuing education to physicians, nurses, social
workers, counselors and other allied health professionals; and supported the
training of more than 600 people in CPR, advanced cardiac life support and

Faculty Development
Tidbit: “Vary Your Teaching Style” (Adapted from Walker
Teaching Resource Center)
“Lecture, provide group
activities, conduct discussion groups, plan for other teaching styles to capture
all of your students into your content and discipline.” Lots of “active
learning techniques” are available through one of my favorite teaching
strategies sites: http://www.oncourseworkshop.com/Student%20Success%20Strategies.htm.
If you
have a great strategy that seems to always work, send
it to me, and I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit. (All
Faculty Development Tidbits courtesy of Steve
Davis, Ph.D., director of faculty
development.)
