Grijalva receives funds for Chagas research facilities in Ecuador
The Catholic University of Ecuador has pledged $25,000 for the remodeling of the Tropical Disease Institute’s (TDI) Chagas disease research facilities in Quito and $15,000 for discretionary Chagas research spending. The TDI Chagas project is led by Mario Grijalva, Ph.D., associate professor of biomedical sciences, and engages undergraduate, graduate and medical students from OU-COM and other U.S.—and Ecuadorian—institutions.
The Tropical Disease Institute will contribute an additional $15,000 for furniture from funds generated by OU-COM’s education abroad programs.
The remodeling will improve administrative and research space, create a deep freezer room and increase the size of the insectary. The funds will also support the installation of magnetic card security access and a close circuit video security system.
Dr. Grijalva expects construction to start within the month, with projected completion in September, 2008.

Faculty Development Tidbit: Be Alert to Boredom…! (Adapted from Walker Teaching Resource Center)
“You might lose some of your students no matter what the topic, what the hour, or which day of the week you teach. But, if too many tune out, you should consider changing something. It might be as simple as changing the volume of your voice, or the rate/pace you talk. You might begin to include interesting stories or anecdotes related to the classroom material.”
You can find more “Teaching Tips” at your faculty development web resource site: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm.
If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, send it to me, and I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit (all Faculty Development Tidbits courtesy of Steve Davis, Ph.D., director of faculty development, www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd).
