Hamel-Lambert leads OU team at faculty development “charrette”

Faculty for the Engaged Campus, a national initiative of community-campus health partnerships, has selected Ohio University among 20 colleges and universities to design innovative models of faculty development based on community engagement. Institutional teams will meet in Chapel Hill, N.C. May 28-30 for a charrette—an intensely focused, multi-day “design collaboration.” At least four participating institutions will subsequently receive grants to implement and evaluate their designs.

Jane Hamel-Lambert, Ph.D., will lead OU’s cross-disciplinary team, which also includes faculty from communication studies, social work and political science. Dr. Hamel-Lambert is the OU-COM director of interdisciplinary mental health education and the president of Interprofessional Partners for Appalachian Children (IPAC), a regional network that connects community agencies and university departments dedicated to children’s mental health.

Stevens and team discover dino tracks on Arabian Peninsula

Nancy Stevens, Ph.D., associate professor of biomedical sciences, and her research partners from the Netherlands and Yemen, have discovered the first dinosaur tracks on the Arabian Peninsula. In the May 21 issue of the journal PLoS ONE, they report evidence of a large ornithopod dinosaur, as well as a herd of 11 sauropods walking along a Mesozoic coastal mudflat in what is now the Republic of Yemen.

The site preserved footprints of 11 small and large sauropods—long-necked, herbivorous dinosaurs that lived in the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods—traveling together at the same speed. The rocks in which the dinosaur tracks are preserved are likely Late Jurassic in age, some 150 million years old.

Paleontological findings have been few and far between in the Arabian Peninsula, but Dr. Stevens and her team believe the area could be rich in discovery. This finding provides new insights into the geological and chronological overlap of dinosaur species as well as their herding behaviors.

Witmer filmed by National Geographic

On Sat., May 17, Larry Witmer, Ph.D., Chang Ying-Chien professor of paleontology, attracted a film crew from National Geographic, who documented his paleontological research using CAT scans.

Dr. Witmer has used the scanning equipment at O'Bleness since 1996 to
peer inside the skulls of not only modern animals, but those of dinosaurs as well. National Geographic, which filmed his CAT scan as part of a special on “bizarre dinosaurs” to air next year, isn't the first film crew to visit O'Bleness. The BBC, the History and Discovery Channels and crews from Japan and Germany have been to the hospital to record the scanning process Dr. Witmer and O'Bleness employee Heather Rockhold routinely conduct at the hospital.

Faculty Development Tidbit: Promote Student Success…! (Adapted from Walker Teaching Resource Center)

“At the beginning of each class period, select a student to give a short summary of the main points of the last class (or assigned reading). This helps students who missed the previous class and helps you understand what the students see as important. It also helps students work on their oral communication skills.” Try adapting a version of this idea in your next class and note how the class goes—you may be on to something here.

You can find more “Teaching Tips” at your faculty development web resource site: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm

If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, send it to me, and I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit (all Faculty Development Tidbits courtesy of Steve Davis, Ph.D., director of faculty development, www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd).

Faculty Development Tidbit: Be Alert to Boredom…! (Adapted from Walker Teaching Resource Center)

“You might lose some of your students no matter what the topic, what the hour, or which day of the week you teach. But, if too many tune out, you should consider changing something. It might be as simple as changing the volume of your voice, or the rate/pace you talk. You might begin to include interesting stories or anecdotes related to the classroom material.”
