Osteopathic Heritage Foundation awards

Several individuals associated with OU-COM were recognized at this year’s American Osteopathic Association convention held in Las Vegas last week.

During the convention’s American Osteopathic Foundation dinner, William Burke, D.O., (’88), received a Distinguished Service Award from the foundation for his work in China after the devastating earthquake on May 12. Also at the AOF dinner, Roy Harris, D.O., (‘92), received the Merck/Schering-Plough CAP Excellence Award for Physician of the Year.

In terms of scholarships, Debra Lewis, OMS II, received the Russell C. McCaughan, D.O., Education Scholarship, and Jeremy Riehm, OMS III, received a Welch Scholars Grant. Both awards recognize academic achievement and a commitment to osteopathic medicine.

Benjamin Appleby, husband of Erin Remster, D.O. (’08), received the Donna Jones Moritsugu Memorial Award, given to a graduating medical student’s spouse to recognize outstanding support of his or her professional partner, family and the osteopathic medical profession.

In other convention news, Jill Harman, M.Ed., director of alumni affairs, was elected vice-chair of the AOA Council of Development and Alumni Professionals. Karoline Lane, M.L.S., director of communication, was elected vice-chair of the AACOM Marketing Advisory Council.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Faculty Development Tidbit: Stimulate your senses.

·        We absorb information through our senses, translate it into electrical signals, disperse those signals to separate parts of the brain, then reconstruct what happened, eventually perceiving each event as a whole.

·        The brain seems to rely partly on past experience in deciding how to combine these signals, so two people can perceive the same event very differently.

·        Our senses evolved to work together—each sense influences perception of the other senses—which means that we learn best if we stimulate several senses at once.

·        Smells have an unusual power to trigger memories, maybe because smell signals bypass the thalamus and head straight to the destinations, which include that supervisor of emotions known as the amygdala.

-Summary of Rule #9 “Stimulate more of the senses” from “brain rules” by John Medina (www.brainrules.net)

Find more “Teaching Tips” at your OUCOM & CORE faculty development Web resources: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm or http://www.ohiocore.org/cf/index.htm.

If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, please send it to me, and I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit.
